I am considering getting a GT3 RS WP to replace my Aston DBS Superleggera ... historically I have always looked for 4 seat cars so that we can use on the odd occasion with the family or my 2 boys (9 and 12) ... recent cars have been 991.1 GTS, 991.1 Turbo s, 992 C2S and then a move away from 911’s to the AM.

The DBS is immense and such an event to drive, however with the recent addition of a dog to the family, and me wanting to do more track days in the future I am considering something more track focussed and with 2 seats as I think the back seats have been used 3 or 4 times in the last 12m and most of those me manipulating a journey to use the car !

Obviously the move to 2 seats opens up a whole new world of options across Lamborghini, Ferrari, McLaren etc, however I have loved my 911’s ... we have a 4x4 and I use an electric car each day so this would be a weekend car for fun and I plan to do 3/4 track days a year.

Questions;

- would you opt for a GT3 RS WP over the competition for my requirements ?
- anything specific to look for on the RS ?
- with the impending GT3 launch, should I hold fire for say 12m and see what happens to prices ? - -There seems to be a fair few GT3 RS for sale currently - driven by the above ?
- hate to ask and not a primary driver but thoughts on residuals ? The DBS was heavily discounted but will still be a fairly big hit ... unlikely McLaren levels though !

Thanks

Hi,

I have a DBS and recently added a GT3RS non-WP car for trackdays.
Two entirely different cars .....

The Aston DBS is more of a GT perfect for commuting and driving longer distances.
It's a great car and stupid fast, but personally I've never completely trusted the rear end grip, even in the dry.
I would also be loathed to thrash the DBS around a track; it's just too pretty but I'd also be concerned about whether the car could take the hammering of regular track use.
(I haven't tried it on track and have only done 2.5k miles in the car though, so I can't speak with any conviction other than my perception of the car).

The GT3RS is much stiffer/tighter and feels rock solid.
I bought mine in November primarily as a trackway car, but with the latest lockdown the days I had booked have all been cancelled, so I haven't tried it on track yet, but based on how the car 'feels' on the road, I am 99% confident it'll be good.
Plenty of other far more knowledgeable guys on here than me though .... search forum topics!

In terms of other cars/makes/models .... I can only say what I have tried myself ...

McLaren 720
I did one trackway in my 720. It was supremely fast, braking was good, turn-in and agility was excellent, but I'm just not sure the car would take too many hard driven days as it feels a bit flimsy. I have seen quite a few on trackways though, so wouldn't necessarily be put off and they can be picked up for reasonable money. Quickest car I've driven/owned.

Ferrari 488
I did one trackway in my 488 spider. Drove fantastically well, but I drove it like my Challenge Car and burnt the brake callipers (started yellow, ended burnt orange) but otherwise felt fantastic on track. I took my Pista for a few laps round Donington but wasn't overly impressed, although setup changes would no doubt make a big difference.

Ferrari Lusso
My mate and my dad drove my Lusso round Silverstone all day. They both raved about it, so I wouldn't be put off by the shape/size and it has 2 rear seats which are far more useable than the DBS, but it's a big front engined car, so if you're specifically after a trackday toy, there are better cars.

Another option I considered, was a BMW M2 Comp.
I decided to go the GT3RS route, but I hear good things about the M2.

Personally, for what you're looking for, the GT3RS would be my choice .... that's what I ended up buying myself.
Theres also lots of options in terms of upgrades.
I was advised by more knowledgeable PH'rs against a WP car, as the mag wheels are very expensive to replace, so do some research on that if you're looking for a WP car.

Happy hunting!

I havent driven a 991 RS so cant help on that but all other Porsches I have driven always felt very solid. I can highly recommend a Scuderia as a weekend and occasional track day car - imo more of an event than the Porsches and works reasonably well on track while being a very comfortable road car.

Good luck with your search

I think it is driven by 992 GT3 coming very soon. every other 991.2 GT car is in much shorter supply on the used market than they were three months ago. Suspect it’s because 991.2 RS WP cars are the last GT cars OPC’s delivered so there the one’s the favoured customers have got in their garage at the moment...so it’s the one being sold to make way. That said there’s really not that many for sale...just odd that there twice as many RS’s fro sale at OPC’s than GT3’s.

Might be worth ringing a few OPC’s to see if they’re expecting any soon....personally I would look on this as an opportunity to have a choice of cars rather than be worried about them taking a £20k hit. Within six weeks life might be very different and you could be driving one on a track smile

Hopefully we will see more supply of 991 Speedsters to the market as they are now at small premiums to list vs the initial surge. Many favoured customers received allocations so will see more supply with 992 GT3 launch.
As a numbered car, will more collectible than 991 GT3 RS/Touring.

Thanks for the replies, plenty of food for thought ... unfortunately there is no way i will get the DBS AND GT3 signed off - it is a struggle to be allowed one toy !!

great point on supply over the coming months and the 992 GT3 ... maybe wait until the Autumn and see where everything has landed ...
