Another of those incidents that I’m glad to be nowhere near. Nobody hurt, no cargo lost.

Interesting that it wasn’t immediately ripped off. Presumably it happened at relatively low speed and altitude as I’d imagine if it happened during cruise, it would have been catastrophic.

It's still surprising it's not ripped up the fuselage more? (hard to tell from the pics, but the "substantial" damage must be largely internal?)

The 757 was not originally designed as a freighter. Therefore, cutting a large hole in the fuselage to accommodate the freight door means that, once the door is open, the fuselage is substantially weakened. Because of this, there are strict limits on the circumstances in which the door can be opened - such as restrictions on moving the aircraft on the ground, the speed at which it can be towed etc.

There is a strong possibility that the door opening in flight could have significantly damaged the fuselage structure.
