Decimalisation Day 15/2/71
Discussion
50 year ago today, what are your memories?
I was 8, and got 2.5p in new coins (the first day they were valid), which was sixpence in old money. Swapped the coins at school with one of the thick kids who had 3 shillings in old money (a two shilling and a one shilling coin) which was 15p in new money and was still valid currency.
With my astutely negotiated windfall, I went to buy a matchbox car on the way home from school, as they were 3 shillings so would be 15p now. But the shop were selling them for 30p because the stupid old bat in the shop (she was probably about 40
) thought 3 shilling was now 30p. I got thrown out of the shop for arguing. Got home, told my gran, who gave me a hiding for a) swapping my new money for old and b) arguing with the woman in the shop who obviously knew better than me.
I'm still angry about it now, thinking back. I guess I should let it go and move on.

But which Matchbox model did you want?I was 8, and got 2.5p in new coins (the first day they were valid), which was sixpence in old money. My most recent memory is that there is also a thread running here -

Hopefully it was a 007 Aston with ejector seat and top secret message in the box.
Shortly after the date I set about collecting every possible date of 1 bob bit, never got a complete set but still have them, they are close to worthless. Would have been far better buying some matchbox toys. I also saved some half crown coins but my sister gave them away.
Slightly later, probably 1974 I recall that petrol was 23p gallon as was a pint in the local.
