Sold car and left whole v5 in the car, need to cancel tax

As title says, I have sold a car privately and mistakenly left the whole v5 in the car and the new driver has driven off, so now i'm unable to cancel the tax, and now i cant seem to get hold of the new owner, is there anything i can do? as i don't want to be paying road tax for a car i don't own anymore

Complete change of keeper online and tax will be automatically refunded. You will need the v5 document reference number though.

Yeah i've tried this, I don't have the v5 so I can't get the reference number though, and can't get hold of the new owner

OP, it's not just the tax though is it? You are still registered keeper for fines etc.

Ownership hasn't been transferred, what's to stop them from not transferring so i keep paying tax, 100% error on my behalf but i'm just wondering if there was another way to transfer ownership

The V5 doesn't transfer ownership, but your point is true ref where fines will firstly be directed.

I literally wrote out the various details of the car on an A4 piece of paper and sent it to the DVLA, they changed ownership and that was that. I didn't have a V5 because they'd (yet again..) never sent me one. I didn't get any contact though, just the usual slip advising me I'm no longer the registered keeper and the tax refund.

What details did you have on the piece of paper? The DVLA states you need new keepers address etc.

Did you meet them down a dark alley and take £20 with white powder all over them

You can tell DVLA you are no longer keeper. Make sure you do this ASAP, mate sold a car for me whilst I was abroad a while back, new owner didn’t bother taxing it and I ended up with penalties!

I'd just phone DVLA and explain the situation.

When I sold my last car I did all the paperwork but then realised I could do it online so did that. Then I panicked in case there would be problems with me completing the online form and then DVLA receiving the paper one. I phoned them and they said it was fine.

do you have proof you sold it? a receipt signed by both? If theres any comeback this may be useful

This means nothing to the DVLA, they are savage!
