Had my Iphone 8 for just over a year now and maximum battery capacity is down to 86% which is less than I expected! I could pay Apple for a battery replacement but I think I’ll just buy the SE.

Is there such thing as good charging practice? I leave it plugged in overnight then top up throughout the day when it’s down 20% or below.

My 7 was down to 73% or so. It was starting to get annoying!

Out shopping the other week and dropped it off at my local back street phone shop and they replaced he battery for £30 in under 1 hour. By the time I had done my shopping it was ready to pick up.

Back to 100% and working a treat. Much less than a new phone.

I only charge mine when it gets down to about 20% - but the newer phones/OSes have 'optimised charging' to mitigate some of the bad charging routines that owners use.

Keeping it topped up all the time is about the worst thing you can do for battery life.

Here's Apple's notes/guidelines

86% after a year is pretty much on the curve for normal use. You should still get a day of normal use out of that though?

My 11 is 85% after 14 months, still does me fine and I've never felt it's running out quicker than it used to. I just plug it in overnight and whenever it seems prudent to do so, in the car usually.

The management of batteries in modern phones is much better than it used to be, it will only trickle towards 100% as you approach your normal wake-up time instead of ramming to 100% full at 10.30pm and it sitting fully charged all night, things like that.

I expect technology to fit round my life though, not the other way round, and am not going to obsess about battery conditioning, charging strategies etc. If it gets too needy in terms of charging I'd just get a new battery fitted, but having swapped phones every 1-2 years since the iPhone 5 I've never felt the need.

The closest was the iPhone 7 which used to get red hot sometimes (never good for battery health) and was starting to feel a bit limp in terms of longevity, but even that soldiered on for another couple of years as my son's phone.

I got my iPhone 8 in October 2018 and it still has 89% capacity. I'm a light user though. It usually has 20-50% charge left when I go to bed on a night. I leave it charging overnight. I've only had to top it up during the day a handful of times in all the time I've had it and I've never had it drop below 10% charge. My mum recently got a used iPhone 6S and that is still on 86% capacity. My OH's 6S, on the other hand, was down to 64% capacity by the time she replaced it with an SE a few weeks ago, but she'd often let it run flat and then leave it dead for hours before charging it.
