My MIL has asked me to order her an Amazon Fire Tablet, she said the one she had seen was "about £40 and she wants a bigger screen" - but she knows very little about anything to be honest.

When I had a look on Amazon, a refurbished 8" which I think will be too small is coming in at £50.

Also, when it says "with ads" does that mean they are intrusive?

Is there a better value alternative I should be looking at? I'm Apple through and through and have been my entire life so I'm clueless when it comes to this.

What is she wanting to use one for?

I bought a fire hd in the Black Friday sales and find the thing horrible to use in terms of the interface, really wouldn’t recommend one for someone.

Something to do with research for a course she's doing at work.

She's not got much money and she's a total technophobe - had to come round to ask why the iPhone we got her had stopped ringing - she'd flicked the silent switch on the side.

I'm not against ordering something she'll be able to use for a bit more and telling her it was £50.

It just needs to be user friendly enough that you would be confident you could show your 80 year old Granny how to use it.

I'll have a chat with her later and ask her why the Fire tablet specifically but I assume it's a price thing. Maybe I could find her a older second hand iPad, I'd be happier showing her how to use that.

I have an Amazon Fire Tablet - I think I bought it in the Black Friday 2019 sale for £55 - I paid the extra £10 to have it without adverts ( well worth it ). So the original price would have been £45 with ads.
I use it like a kindle and listen to audiobooks on it that I've borrowed from the public library ebook system.

Also an extensive Apple user.

Bought a FIRE HD for my 6yr to watch Netflix etc in the car and some games.

I struggle to get it to do much. It is a media platform, not a tablet imho

My Daughter started off with a Fire Tablet and although it worked for what she wanted it for (Youtube etc) it was awful for anything else. The operating system is all over the place and is very much geared around you buying books and movies at every opportunity. This wasn't an issue for my Daughter what with her being four years old at the time, but it annoyed me enough that I gave her my old iPad and bought myself a Samsung Tablet from Amazon for around £180.

I would suggest steering clear of the Amazon tablets as they're not very intuitive. I'd go for either a second hand iPad or one of the cheaper Android tablets as both are easy enough to use.

I really wouldn't recommend an Amazon tablet either and I am quite keen on Amazon as a rule but I bought one a few years ago for the eldest and it really was limited even compared to a basic android tablet, I recently bought my eldest a cheap chinese Android tablet off Amazon for around £65 for a 7 inch tablet with 32gb storage but limited RAM and other than being a bit slow to load at times its been good and I would take it every time over an Amazon Fire of any variant.

If you are buying it for somebody else, if its ordered through your amazon account and she has her own account, she (you pretending to be her) can do online chat and tell them that somebody else has bought it for you, but its got ad's on it and you dont want them. They usually disable it for free.

My son has one (as a cheap iPad alternative) he uses it for Amazon tv and Netflix etc and presumably all sorts I don’t want to know about.

I think it’s a great iPad alternative and you get a much larger display for your money.

We've got a few different Amazon Fire HD tablets and contrary to what others have said I actually think they're pretty good, at least for what we use them for.

We use them for things like using the web, Netflix, Disney+, Youtube, reading stuff on the readly app and the kids play the odd game on them too. When you consider the low cost of them vs an iPad I think they're a bargain.

Yes you can't work on them but why would I do that when I've got a laptop?

I've got the 7 HD I've stripped out as much Amazon stuff as possible and installed Google Play Store. its fine for watching stuff on etc.

If I was using it for browsing etc might be a little slow.

+1 I'm not sure what more you'd expect from them.

Ok for what you might call leisure use, but not sure I'd want it for course work

Seems like the OPs mum in law just wants a big screen though.

It might be perfect for this depending on what apps she uses.

What does she currently use and what does she use it for? If usability is the issue, just get a bigger version of what she already has. Nothing wrong with a Fire HD for watching stuff but I wouldn't want to actually do 'work' on it.

Browsing/research mostly with a decent screen i.e. 10" minimum I would say. It's not 'coursework' as such, more research before doing a very basic e-learning course. She used to come round here and use our stuff but at the moment she's not as she works in a care home and my wife is heavily pregnant.

If I said £120 maximum budget for an Android tablet worth having, what would you guys recommend?

I've a Fire 7 I bought in the 2018 Black Friday sale, paid extra to get the adds removed. Has always been painfully slow - was very surprised to see the hardware is still the same on the latest version just more on board storage. Amazon stopped OS support on it within about 3 months ... All I really use it for is a SONOS controller, would replace it but there's nothing else close to it price wise that you know will work (as opposed to the dodgy Chinese re-brands/clones that get 1-3 star ratings on Amazon)
