I'm keen to move to 3 days a week. I've been with my current employer for 20 years. Please can anyone advise if it is entirely up to my employer to grant this request or are there any rights an employee now has around going part time? Thanks.

You’d have to check if your employer has any policies in place covering this.

Where employers do, it usually states that you have a right to submit a reasonable request and they are duty bound to consider it; they’re not however duty bound to grant it.

As is usual in such cases, having a good chat with your line manager is a great starting point. There you can share your expectations and also listen to theirs. Then hopefully you can both come to some compromise agreement.

If all that fails, then you usually have two choices; carry on as normal or leave.

Good luck!

There is an official form to use to make a flexible working request.

This can only be refused on certain specific grounds.

Read up on 'flexible working request' to learn more. smile
