Hello All,

Hoping someone has come across this as this might be similar on any BMW.

I have a 2017 BMW X1, with an error message " secure vehicle with parking brake when stationary "

This message comes up on the control display and instrument cluster, every time the car is started or stopped.

The automatic hand brake seems to be working correctly and operates as it should.

so is this just an electrical glitch and can it be reset or something more serious ?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I did post this under suspension & brakes, but only got one reply.

Have you got a ‘Door open’ warning as well ?

Automatic or manual gearbox ?

Might be an idea to get it read for fault codes.

It’s the kind of thing i’d expect to see on an open door. Or a faulty park/neutral signal.

Car locks ok ?

That said, I have no experience of fixing BMW’s smile

Car locks fine.
I will try and get a fault code,I have a cheap reader that doesn't show any faults.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Seems more like the gearbox park pawl isn't working or isn't being sensed. Many are used to driving auto's and just leaving them in park without the handbrake, maybe the message is just a reminder to use the handbrake while this fault is present.

If you put it in park with the handbrake off can you push it?

Does it show Park on the display when you select park?

As mentioned above, if you’re getting the codes read, ask them to look at live data for the gearshift module, transmission module, engine module, body module.

I’d be looking to see if it can read when it’s in Park or Neutral.

Just checked it, No when in park with hand brake off can not push it.

That good, howabout the Park indication? It's looking more like a shifter sensor than a gearbox fault in that case.

It'll probably show on the live data of a decent scanner or in the module fault codes. Might be worth finding a local specialist to scan it for you.

In the meantime just be careful making sure the handbrake is on before you leave the car just in case.

Update

Car was scanned and came up with error code 420106 - solenoid selector lever wrongly not locked in P.

After checking youtube it is a common fault with BMW/Mini on lots of automatics.

You have to remove central console to remove gear shift and take apart to replace a small spring, a lot of work.
This seems to be a design fault using a weak spring that breaks.

Just been quoted nearly £500 just for the gear selector module....plus labour

I feel a serious bout of DIY is needed

I'm based in WS9 and can repair this issue. Always have the springs in stock - done plenty of them now.

Hi, I live in Bristol so a bit far to travel, but thanks for the offer.
Can you suggest where I can get a spring from?
Still using without the repair as it doesn't effect anything
apart from message on dash that needs clearing every day.

Sorry for delayed response. If you search Blue Meets White on Google you'll find me. Don't want to bust any forum rules but more than happy to chat about it.
