A readily available strong Cheddar?

Hello all

I’m looking for a recommendation.

I love a strong/mature cheddar and usually love trying local ones from various market stalls/country shows etc.

Due to the lockdown my search is restricted to M&S, Asda, Aldi.

Any recommendations please?

Seriously Strong extra mature Cheddar is what ms16v likes.

M&S used to do a "Vintage" Cornish cheddar - black packaging and No.7 on the flavour scale. I think the 'Cornish Cruncher' No.6 might be the nearest. Nice taste but the Cornish cheddars seem to be a bit sweet.

If you want a wider range try Finecheese.co.uk. I like the Montgomery Cheddar. Not strong, but very smooth, and very moreish.

Waitrose do a nice 7 strength Somerset cheddar which is my favourite.

Aldi 24 month aged vintage cheddar - small yellow/gold packet. Its the best I've found from any of the supermarkets, including Waitrose. Miles ahead of any of the branded stuff.

Online and easily delivered...chedder gorge cave aged is awesome.., 2nd would be a Canadian 6 strength from Waitrose, black bomber is a good shout after that! Chedder gorge rips the roof of your mouth off!

M&S Cornish Cruncher is really nice, I’m my opinion at least. The one in the gold packaging (5 years mature) in particular but the one in black packet is also very good and a lot cheaper.

Have to recommend Castello Tickler extra mature, I believe tesco's sell it. Aldi do a good range too, the Scottish Vintage is especially tasty if available.

It's not a cheddar, but the Red Fox Red Leicester from Lidl is absolutely beautiful.

My go-to cheddar is Mull of Kintyre though.

Black Bomber is at some Sainsbury's and Waitrose, or order it online.

It's mass produced, despite the artisan appearance, but absolutely oustanding.

i saw the food unwrapped video about this a week ago and really want to try it. It seems though that only sainsburys sell this cave-aged stuff.

My Tesco has it, but I guess I am reasonably local to cheddar.

I find that the cheese isn't crumbly as such, it has more of a creamy texture with a tang that is much more rounded.

I do enjoy the previously mentioned Black Bomber. The best Cheddar in my book is Godminster Vintage:

Loads of flavour yet still creamy. They usually have a Black Friday offer each year, so I order up 1kg round for Christmas.

I used to rate Waitrose Cornish Quartz for a supermarket cheddar. Stronger than most with lots of crunchy little crystals running through it.

My favourite is Keen's Farmhouse cheddar - from the Waitrose No 1 range.

I would recommend Isle Of Mull Cheddar. It's my current favourite.
