Can anyone help prior to me ringing up the £1.50 pm technical helpline. Just signed up to the 1mb package and the damn thing keeps disconnecting every 4-5 minutes. Its now getting on my nerves. Is it something i've set up wrong?

Cheers

Try asking on 0800 800 060 that's a freephone number.

Also Broadband status report on 0800 169 0199 (might be a known fault in your area)

Then again it could be a dialler on your system, virus check and spyware check your PC.

I'd do the virus check thing...

I'll just do some digging and come back with some links for free stuff - if you stay connected!!!

BT broadband has been smashing for me (2Meg connection at the mo... but then I use it a lot)

had the same problem with my BT BB, turns out I am quite far away from the exchange, had a BT engineer come round and wire in some kind of dedicated BB line for £60, works fine now.

Does anything happen when it kicks you off? And how are you connected? Router or dial up? Also is this a new PC or new connection software?

Make sure you have the little connecter thing (technical term!!) plugged into each phone socket. If you don't then you will keep gettting thrown off.

the 'thingy' described in the post above is a microfilter. You will need one for each phone socket with a phone plugged in (even if you don't have the computer plugged into it).

You should check in case you have any faulty microfilters. Rule ouot hardware problems by unplugging all phones, choosing one microfilter and connecting and seeing how your connection behaves. Then start systematically plugging your phones back in.

Assuming your problem is hardware related, you should be able to identify any problems this way.

Hopefully it will just be a dodgy microfilter which is a few quid to replace.

Just for my 2p, I don't rate BT's broadband packages at all. My friend uses them and he has had no problems, but we look after 1300 IFA's at work and we actively encourage them to avoid BT for BB services.

Each to their own, tho - hope you get it sorted quickly.

Thats the one, and you need a microfilter for any socket that has Sky plugged into it as well, even if there is no phone.

I forgot to mention Sky, good call MrsBug. As an aside (probably worth a seperate thread) We have multi-room for the sky, but the socket broke in our room (with no encouragement from me, honest! ) so that box is not plugged in . Twice I have had a message on the screen saying it should be plugged into a phone line. Am I going to get an angry call from Sky?

Remember, EVERYTHING plugged into a phone socket will cause power drain, so it could be worth looking for a pattern in drops caused by other things connecting.

You will get a letter, I get them all the time as I have to run our bedroom sky from a socket in a different room. I keep unplugging it and usually get a letter about 2 weeks later. As long as you don't leave it unplugged you will be fine

Hmmm. Kinda bugs me that it needs to be plugged into a phone line anyway. Never mind tho.

In truth, there are 3 sockets in our house, and the ones on the first and second floor have decided to play up. The house is only 1 year old, so I suspect something has just worked loose somewhere down the line.

I suppose a letter might prompt me to do something about it.

Cheers.

You just won't get any updates to the firmware for new options on the screen menus.

I never have my Sky box plugged in and I have never had any letters or messages. The only problem is that the sky box stores the memeory for any box office films and I sometimes get a bigger bill than expected when I do plug it in as it uploads all the info at once.

A friend has just had BB installed and the same thing was happening to him, after a lot of searching it turned out to be a setting in outlook express, he had it set to check his mail every 5 minutes and because he was on dialup previous he had it set to disconnect after every send & recieve, Unchecked the box and now it remains connected.
