DB9 Grilles & Tick question.
Discussion
Not sure when the 5 bar grill was used with the DB9 but I know the 5 bar grill can be fitted to an early 7 bar car.
Regarding the tick issue -
It seems like the tick occurs with the Cosworth manufactured engines for the 2004 and early 2005 DB9 cars, by mid 2005 all the engines were being produced at the new AM engine plant at Cologne, these engines don't seem to suffer the tick problem, they can be identified with a different engine number AM04/1......
It could be different manufacturing materials used in Germany, nobody has a definitive answer to this, doesn't seem to be age, mileage, driving hard or maintenance related, just bad luck. The poor owner finds out that he needs a new engine.
Look at a Bamford Rose Video to find out how to develop the tick if you need to find out if the car suffers from this issue.

I'm not 100% sure but the cross over seems to be VIN A01800 ish, best to look at the engine number, it's easy to find.
Cosworth built engine will be AM04/0....., AMEP built engine AM04/1.......
To the poor owners who get the tick the engine needs a rebuild or replacement, looking at around £15,000.
But it's upto you, my car is an early DB9 2004, VIN A00249 with a Cosworth manufactured engine, almost done 60K miles and driven hard sometimes and no tick!!!..........
So defiantly watch the BR videos, think there's 2 or 3, regarding developing the tick and also find the engine number so you know what your buying.

The first time we heard about the 'tick', was from an owner with username Maverick.
He took his engine to pieces with great enthusiasm several times, posting photos and asking for guidance.
At one point he hurriedly reassembled everything and then drove his DB9 to Norway.
I admired the gentleman, but I think in those days, the real cause of the tick was not widely known.
Wonder what happened to that car?

In all honesty I wouldn’t worry too much about the engine tick , I too have a very early db9 and have no engine issues whatsoever. I would love to know how many of the early engines have the tick but would think it is a very small percentage
I'm starting to think that it may be worth the gamble.Buy a sound early car for a whisker under £30k and self insure with the money saved over a later car could be the way to go.
Over thinking things and scaring myself out of Aston Martin ownership isn't much fun.
If in doubt do what will make the best story!
I'd just buy a 2006 onwards model, I wish I had instead of my 54 plate DB9.
Mine was perfect when I first bought it, but then the 'tick' occurred and I had to choose between spending considerably over half the value of the car to fix it, or sell it for a pathetically small price for an Aston. I sold...
At the moment I think this car looks fantastic

Mine ticked from 16k, when I bought it (didn't notice until after the deal was done), so possibly earlier. That's the lowest mileage I've heard of the issue occurring - lucky me. I deliberately sought out an early car because I didn't like the idea of an Aston with an engine from a Ford factory in Germany, and I paid the price for my prejudice.
I recall a post by BR stating that on average they see two cars a month with the tick. I'm guessing that's a pretty significant percentage, though I have no idea how many early DB9's they deal with in total.
At this point, most DB9's that are going to tick probably already do. Even so, I would avoid early cars with low mileage as they could still develop the tick.
