Porsche 911 GT3 RS (996.2) | Spotted

A 992 generation 911 GT3 RS is in the works. But the 996 version is the greatest of them all. Right?

Doesn’t the 996 GT3 RS still look absolutely fantastic? Porsche’s first maxed-out naturally aspirated GT3 ‘Renn Sport’ arrived way back in 2003, but 18 years on, that thick front splitter, fixed rear wing and negative camber still mean business. It’s a recipe that’s been repeated four times since (both the 997 and 991 generations produced two), and if recent spy pictures are anything to go by, the model will reach new levels of insanity when the 992 iteration arrives. The original 996 GT3 RS is to some, though, the definitive version. It’s easy to see why.

It certainly arrived with a bang as part of Porsche’s 996.2 run, using Hans Mezger’s now legendary flat-six in 3.6-litre guise. The RS engine was essentially a reworked version of the actual GT3’s motor, with race homologated features including reshaped intake and exhaust ports as part of an altered head. Officially, it was rated with 380hp at 7,400rpm, but plenty of owners have claimed that their cars have produced closer to 400hp on rolling roads. Porsche has a habit of understating its outputs, after all, and the GT3 RS is closely related to its competition-grade 911.

That link also ensured that the 996 got plenty of other goodies directly related to going fast on a race track. The GT models are where Porsche has sought to demonstrate the showy peak of its chassis magic, and the 1,360kg RS really established the trend for its stiff but eminently capable machines to follow. Those wanting to maximise the setup could do so via adjustable top mounts, which can be turned 120 degrees into the position used for the 996 Cup cars. Awesome. The front and rear control arms are adjustable, too, and that aero produces actual downforce. It's proper stuff.

The 996 GT3 RS has certainly always come with its fair share of bragging rights, and while 380-400hp wasn’t exactly mind bending even back in ’03, it felt worthy enough in a car equipped with cabin scaffolding, harnesses and buckets. The package was intended to be extreme, but that didn't mean you couldn't hustle it along a public road. It's fair to say that 4.4-second to 62mph with a manual gearbox car is still rapid, even by 2021 standards - although you'll be working a GT3 RS motor hard to get the best from it. We wouldn't have it any other way, of course.

It looked the part too, with GT3 RS decals, on red, chrome-lipped alloys and finished with carbon fibre addenda. While its wheelbase and bodywork are much smaller than its successors, there’s absolutely no mistaking the 996. It is a driver’s car in the truest sense; you don’t have to love Porsches to get that. It is also conspicuously rare - no one in the office could recall seeing one in real life anytime recently. Probably because today's Spotted is one of just 113 cars which came to the UK. Which explains why the price for this one, with 25k on the clock, still comes to a rest at £130k - about what you'd pay for a new 992 GT3. There's a thinker...

Standards, please. I don’t care how you speak elsewhere, but in print, as a journalist, please remember that using ‘sat’ with ‘being’ in this context is not grammatically incorrect as it uses the participle (adjective) “sat” to describe the state of being sat. It is an exact synonym of the version using the participle (adjective) “sitting” and an exact parallel to that which is correctly used in similar situations. Ta.

I'd ask for a refund.

Remember when these were released and the 360CS and buyers couldn’t see point of stripped out road cars and the secondhand values fell?... ah if only true today! Lovely thing

These still look so right and they certainly created a legend.

My other half’s uncle has one and it’s bloody lovely. Not been taken out in it unfortunately.

Still the most desirable RS (aesthetisally) for me although I'd actually go for a gen 1 GT3 even with the headlights, the best wing so far! The only thing that truly puts me off the 996 is the interior design, the dash is the worst of any 911 ever for me, and I never liked it in mine even though I did the car itself - very much so.

It’s slightly misleading to say the 996 GT3RS costs the same as a 992 GT3 at £130,000-
Everyone knows you sure as hell ain’t getting a 992 GT3 at retail list price.

I phoned Leicester OPC to order a GT4 last year and was told by a salesman that I could
have a GT4 on the condition I purchased a £130k Panamera they had in the showroom.
What on earth would I need to buy in order to get a GT3 ?!

Gorgeous. Happy days a decade or so ago when track days were littered with these when they weren't considered investments (including PH's resident motoring lawyer's that got screwed up into a ball at Spa!).

One committed PH'r still uses his on track at least, they still look and sound simply fantastic.

Remember that day in 2008 when I didn't buy one of these for £45,000? Yeah, me too.

The one in Yorkshire with limited history? It was by far an outlier when most were hovering around £55-65k. They still look so good covered in dead bugs, caked in brake dust and rubber smears from marbles.

A kind fella (in one with blue wheels) gave me some pax laps at Bedford in his.
I was blown away.
It sounded great, handled beautifully and seemed to have just the right amount of power.

Love these, such focused and hardcore cars it seems. There's one local to me, I hope for the chance to pour over the details some day if i see it out!

What an amazing car. Still looks fantastic to the eyes today. I’d love to have one of these to blast around in. To be honest even though it’d be totally impractical, I’d have one as a daily, moon miles and all that.

On a very un PH note - 22mpg, I don’t think so laugh

It must just be me, but they never looked quite right. Better in blue, but still, too much soap-bar to it. And I don't like the headlights.

However, a great engine in a great chassis - must be something to drive.

My father had a GT3 from new. He had some pretty extreme cars in his time ( RS200, Stratos, 037 ,Diablo SV ) but he found this to be pretty much undrivable on the road.

Iti you are looking for a track car, I'm sure it's great.

The older ones are the nicer ones and dont think the 997 will ever be beaten in my opinion and tastes.

Right! The only car i regret selling and imo the best RS Porsche, A hard-core car built in low numbers, a very special car.

Oh and undrivable on the road is absolute rubbish if the car remained on the factory set up as mines were it was firm but fine imo.

Just let the mugs and 'influencers' spend their cash on the new ones and pick up a used one.
