Depends on what you need in terms of size:

- BMW 330i
- Mini Cooper S (R53 2003 or R56 post 2010 if one squeezes into budget)
- Renault Megane 225
- Alfa Romeo Mito QV/Cloverleaf
- Renault Clio 200
- Vauxhall Corsa VXR

So something that'll keep up with an old car that did 0-60 in 8 seconds when it was new?

BMW 120D E81 or E82 would do it in the same speed, not an exciting car but I'd choose it over the golf.

Jaguar S type V6 does it half a second quicker than the GT and will be a nicer place to be

A PH hero, the MX5 ticks the box as well

Mini Cooper S is probably one of the quickest cars you'll get at this pricepoint without having to worry of repair bills the same value as the car

My choice would probably be an Astra GTC if my cap was £4k and I wanted the <8sec 0-60 as you'll get a far newer car
