The green camera light on my 2020 M1 MacBook Air remains on if the camera has been used, say for FaceTime etc. I have to shutdown or restart for it to go out.

Any suggestions please?

Stick a band aid over the lens if you are knocking one out.

Simply ring Apple support and work through the various suggestions?

On the subject of the M1 MacBooks - did you opt for 16Gb or 8Gb? Seems that some people are reporting issues with degraded SSDs already s a result of the M1 using SSD as cache...

In true Apple style the SSD is soldered onto the motherboard and cannot be replaced... As a used of Apple products I find their attitude to making repairable, quality hardware disappointing - every Mac seams to come with a number hardware design flaws (butterfly keyboard anyone?)

I just went with the basic 8/256gb.

I did initially order the 16/512gb model, but cancelled and went with the basic one as realistically, all I use if for is for posting questions in forums like this one biggrin

The extra it was going to cost me for the higher spec model was sufficiently high enough to equate for almost half of another MacBook, if that makes sense?

Download something called oversight and it'll launch as soon as it detects the mic or cam being started, then you can kill it. You can deny applications access in System Prefs>Security & Privacy>Privacy. It should show a list of apps that have cam access.

Also, I'm pretty sure if the green light is on, the camera is on, regadless of whether facetime is launched. Have you looked in Utilities>Activity Monitor to see if it definitely is?
