V8 choices....

Thinking of something to replace both my current cars (BMW 635d convertible & Audi TT 3.2),

Looking for something which crusies well and feels premium with good sound system and nice interior but sounds great and goes well so it does the job of both the current cars...

Looked at (but not driven) the follwing;

Budget up to £30k - no kids so any body style is fine

Jaguar XKR (2010 onwards with the 5.0l supercharged

Jaguar XFR (i like the early ones with sculpted lights)

Audi RS5 - 4.2 V8 (i keep going back to these as the engine sounds awesome) 2012 - 2015

BMW E92 M3 (great engine but interior a step down from the 6 series)

Lexus RCF - had a Lexus before and the build quality is very impressive / infotainment not great but useable

Maserati Granturismo - might have to increase budget for the 4.7, they have a lot a presence (but costly to maintain / fix?)


So far the XKR and RS5 seem to jump out with nice interior and reasonable (ish) running costs. In so far as driving dynamics I need something to use daily for work.

Would i be dissappointed with the RS5?

Same engine as the RS5, but better looks.

There is some 8J TT interior used in the R8, if that bothers you (not sure which TT you have).

Do like the R8 but it would have to be a manual (the rtronic is meant to be a bit crap). but it would be quite a bit older at these budgets, not sure about any big ticket maintenance items it might need...

The TT is a Mk1 - interior is built to last!

Just search for Mercedes and minimum engine size 4.0, there's dozens of different models.

Probably just a case of picking what type of car you fancy from the above earlier suggestions.

If its a daily driver that you're after then I don't think you can go wrong with the V8 RS5 with its all weather quattro system.

I got a low mileage one from Audi Approved 12 months ago and love it.

I have heard of potential big bills if you hit transmission (mechatronic unit) or suspension (DRC) problems, so check for FSH and its worth considering an extended warranty. Oh, and apparently they probably will need a carbon clean when high mileage, but I believe that's the case with a lot of manufacturers direct injection (FSI) engines.

Look for a more recent one if you want the ability to stream music from your phone via Bluetooth - but who needs to with that V8 soundtrack :-)

I've never driven the Merc C63 AMG so can't do a comparison, but for me the RS5 is a quality GT car.

If going the RCF route have a good road test before buying.

After the instant throttle response from your 3.2cc TT you'll find the slow reaction of the RCF a little wanting.

If you can stretch to £33k, my F-Type V8 S Convertible meets your criteria. Sounds absolutely incredible!

The Maserati Granturismo IMO has the biggest sense of occasion, looks the best and sounds the best.

However, £30k is an awkward price point for them. The Granturismo Sport represented a major improvement on the Granturismo S (both are 4.7) but start at around £35k, so £30k is a bit too close IYSWIM.

In fact the RS5 engine is actually the R8 V10 with two cylinders chopped off, creating a newer more powerful V8 engine than the R8 V8. This R8 V10 engine is based on the Lamborghini V10 from the Gallardo and then Huracan.
