Hi, I am servicing my car and removed the old filter which had no plastic bit on the end of the filter. The new one arrived today, but this one has a plastic bit on the end with a spring in the middle of it. What is this for and does it matter that the old filter didn't have one and the new one does?

See pics below.

Any help appreciated.

Not the actual filters, but the first photo is like the filter I took off (no plastic bit at top) and the second photo is the new one I ordered (with the additional plastic bit).

I’ve never seen an oil filter like that.

Are you sure the plastic cap on top isn’t part of the packaging to ensure that no foreign bodies get into the filter before fitting ?

I don't think so, as you can still get access to the thread hole. When you press the plastic thing it goes down slightly as there is a spring in it. I could probably snap the plastic off and it would look like the filter I removed but unsure if it has a purpose. I've attached pics of the actual filter.

Now I can see the top more clearly it doesn’t look like a packaging cap any more and looks more like a spacer. I’ve never seen one like that before.

Personally I wouldn’t be fitting that until I’d got further clarification from the parts supplier.

Make?
Model?
Year?
Engine?
Does the number on the old filter cross reference to the number on the new one?

I too wouldn't be fitting the new filter.

Is it a VAG 1.2 TSI or 1.4 TSI? They do take a filter like that with the plastic piece in the top, I'd expect the OLD one to match the NEW one though so make sure you've got the correct one, think there is a 1.4 VAG TDI that takes that type too

Sorry, had to wait until I could reply (newbie). Thanks for the replies everyone. My car is a SEAT Ibiza 1.2 TSI. After you mentioning VAG I looked up what that meant and found out that the Polo 1.2 TSI engine is similar and then found this video-clip on YouTube of someone changing the filter www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWT2tG13hIc&t=229s

The filter he removes and puts in is the same as the one I ordered, so this leads me to believe the garage who serviced it previously put in the wrong oil filter - hopefully no harm done! Still don't know what the plastic springy thing is for though...

Same Engine essentially - most likely used the wrong one previously, the plastic part is just a collar between the filter and housing and when you remove the old one its nice n full of oil that runs up your wrist and sleeve when you turn it upside down lick

Make sure to push the new O-Ring to the outer rim next to it, yours isn't in yet I don't think from your photo

Should look like this when fitted... https://www.car-bock.de/media/image/product/40197/...
