The wife went away for a week a few months back, whilst I did LEJOG.
Spent Tuesday night at home (alone) and then set off to Scotland till the Friday night.
Locked the garage and courtyard but left the front door unlocked
I did put the alarm on though - still the wife was not impressed...

Have gone to bed and left the keys to the front door (and car - Chim 500!!) IN the front door all night long. Gone looking every where for them the next morning and had to give up looking as I was running late for work. Picked up the spare set of keys, went to leave the house and guess what I found in the door!!
Guess I must have friendly (or blind) neighbours!

I've left the front door wide open a few times.
One time during the Christmas period I picked my Gran up to take to my mothers. I got out of the car on the drive and told her not to worry about locking the door(1984 XR3i without cental locking) as I was going to nip out soon and pick up a friend.
Anyway, friend ended up collecting me. Next day I woke up and got into my car to find that not locking to my Gran actually meant not closing the door...
Door had been open all night.
Saying that, I think even if I had left £20 on the dash and a gallon of pertol on the passenger seat no body would have nicked it!

Mate of mine whose front door is on a fairly busy road left his front door ajar for a whole week once - and people walk right past his doorstep!
I guess people assumed if it was ajar there was someone inside. Bloody lucky though!
I've had to do those house checks a couple of times when I've heard funny noises. The bravado I imagine I'd have when I watch films soon evaporates though as I imagine there's a 20 stone murderer behind every door I open. Cue twisting the doorknob then kicking the door, listening out for "ouch" sounds. Quite what I'd do if I heard an ouch I don't know. Probably either cry or go postal. I have no idea.

The police in Wolves (I think) went around late at night trying peoples front doors. If they were open they woke up the occupants and gave them a lecture about locking the door! Can you imagine that! 01:00 and theres a policeman at the door!
We have an alarm which goes to plod. It went off one night but didnt sound for some reason, so plod got called and our keyholder let them in. I got woken up by burly policemen checking I wasnt a burglar who fell asleep!
I know someone a few years back who went into town shopping. He got out of his car and locked the doors.
Had a nice stroll round the shops for a few hours. Walked back to his car, and as you do went to get his keys out of his pocket. He fumbled round and couldn't find them at all. He got a bit panicky and checked his shopping bags etc, nothing.
He was just approaching his car and was about to ring someone to bring his spare keys when he looked at the driver's door. What was hanging out of his door lock?? His bloomin keys!!!
They had been left in his door for two hours or so and nobody had nicked anything or done anything to it. Saying that though it was a G reg Escort, was about 7 years ago now!!

It is amazing how many people forget. I spend a lot of time delivering leaflets for my business (Domestic Cleaning around York anyone!!)
In 3 months I have fuond about half a dozen sets of keys left in front doors. I always knock and advise the residents, who are usually very grateful. I would also say that about one in twenty doors on at a weekend are left open. No wonder there are so many opportunistic break-ins - Good job I am honest.

Why don't houses have central locking, like cars?
Didn't those two designer blokes try to get something like that off the ground? - what was the name of the series - they tried to design an new airline seat, and lots of other things I can't remember then they had to try and get a company to make them.

Sounds like Seymour Powell
Hmmm, I was playing musical cars on our driveway once, which ended up with SWMBOs Fiesta in the street opposite unlocked with the keys in the door - on the pavement side, too.
Left it like that from around 6 p.m. till 10 a.m. the following day (after a frantic search for the keys).
Guess no-one wanted a free 6 month old Fiesta or maybe they thought it was a trap. Bloody lucky, though, because the insurance co. would almost certainly have not paid up had it been stolen ...
Just another senior moment I guess

They can have, but it really needs to be built into the house at the start, and most builders aren't into that sort of kit. It's more common in America - you can get front doors that have fully built in video cameras, electronic locking and keypad locks. We're still at the stage of being impressed by floral leaded glass

Better By Design I think the program was. Excellent guys. Designed the Tefal cordless kettle way back when I believe. On the program they also worked on a dry razor using a blade and vibrations to cut the hair.... Hang on a second whats that new Gillette razor
(sorry thread hijack...i'll go now)

Ah yes, was that the series where a couple were trying to market a completely useless bin and a bloke invented a useless swimming mask?
Not sure about any of the ideas, but I love good design and am fascinated by the thinking behind it.
