Sorry, I am a complete technophobe dad, trying to set up a new mobile phone for my son. Completely confused as to what I need to do.

I have an old mobile phone (Samsung Galaxy A3) which I want to give to my son to use, with a new SIM I have just bought. All fine so far, I have done a factory reset on the phone, it's all wiped, so ready to use with the new SIM.

BUT... when I reboot it, the only option I have is to enter a Google account that has previously been associated with the phone. Now this of course completely goes against the "I want to start again with a new Google account, new phone number, etc"-point, so I am a bit stuck.

I guess I kind of get it... I assume it's so that if the phone is stolen, someone can't just use it as their own really easily, and it's "locked" to the previous user's Google account.

But it's my phone, I own it, I want to completely dissacoaite it with the previous Google account that was used on it, and use it with the new Google account I just set up.

Is that possible? Surely it must be? Any help really appreciated. Thanks!

Can you access your Google account on another device and 'dis-associate' the device from your account?

It's Factory Reset Protection. You'll have sign back in & follow procedures like this one:

You need to login to the old Google account. set the phone up again.

The go into settings and accounts, remove the Google account first, then do another factory reset.

It's to stop people just factory resetting phones and using them.

Thanks all. But looks like I am f#cked, as I deleted the old associated Google account earlier, thinking that would help, but now means I can't log into the phone and dissociate it etc furious And it won't let me recover the account.

None of the workarounds seem to work on my phone either (the right menus don't come up).

So I end up with a phone I own that I can't use mad

What do you mean you deleted it? if so you will need to speak to Google customer services, they will sort it but you might have to show ID etc.

Is your 'new' phone working on said Google account? Or is it on a different account?

There was an option on Family Link on the old phone to delete the account, I for some reason thought this would "help"....

How old is your Son? He may know more about it than you.

Looks like I am sorted... managed to restore the old Google account... it recognised that on the old phone, and said do you want to use that one (I said no) or use a new account (I said yes).

So I'm in with the new account now!! smile

Thanks for everyone's help beer
