What do I need for best performance and future proofing?
Discussion
I have a LG smart TV, LG sound bar, LG blu ray player, BT TV box and whole house wifi. The router itself is about 25m away in cable length and cannot be moved. Between it and all the tech I've just listed there are 2 x 2ft thick stone walls, so in general the wifi around the house isn't great even with 2 whole house BT hubs. I want to run a cable or cables back from the TV end of things to the main router in order to get the most reliable and quickest signal. So what do I need? I've just been looking at a cat 7 cable on Amazon and a Netgear GS305 5 port ethernet box of tricks, so would those two make sense? I've no idea about this sort of thing! Would I be correct in thinking that I'd just plug everything that has an ethernet port into the 'box of tricks' and the cat 7 from it to the main router and I'm sorted?
On another note, I watched Coming to America 2 on Amazon and noticed how badly out of sync the sound was with the movie. Is that likely to be caused by the wifi and cured by running the cable?

There's no/little point getting fancier than cat6a at the very fanciest for cables. 5e is probably entirely sufficient.
For the price, get a GS308 rather than 305 - spare ports are often handy and the difference is negligible.
The sound sync issue could be either net connection related, or sync issue between the sound bar and the TV. Is it there if you use the built in TV speakers?

I'll take your advice on the equipment, thanks. Does it sound like I'm doing the right thing running a cat 5, 6 or whichever back to the main router in the first instance? For the price, get a GS308 rather than 305 - spare ports are often handy and the difference is negligible.

I've not tried the tv without the sound bar, so I'll check that out tonight.

Yes - plug one end of your new Cat5E cable in your internet router, the other in the netgear switch, then plug all your devices into the switch. Job jobbed. Cat5E more than sufficient for this scenario.Gassing Station | Computers, Gadgets & Stuff | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
