Hi all,

Hopefully the right subforum - bought a car off a dealer on 8th Jan and still haven't had the V5 through (have the new keeper slip etc so it's taxed etc).

Has anyone else had experience of it taking ages due to Covid etc or should I think about chasing the dealer up to confirm they've sent it (or even consider doing a V62).

Cheers

If they do it online, it should only be a week (less in my recent experience). I expect that postal changes take longer mind.

Have had a to do a few things with DVLA in recent months and have been pleasantly surprised at how quickly they have responded, all online however.

Chase the dealer first, I've had two through and came in the normal time of a few days. 2 months isn't a delay it's either not been done or wrong address put down / lost in the post etc...

I'd query the DVLA.

My lad bought a car last week and the V5 arrived three days later.

I just did a number plate replacement, therefore new V5, took less than a week to arrive!

I suspect the dealer hasn't done something and doing it online takes about 5 minutes these days.

Bought a camper van and it took just over two months!

Most dealers have a computer setup that allows them to do it quickly but some dealers still do it the old, send a sheaf of paperwork in the post type way. Add in Covid delays at both ends and it’s a recipe for delays.

Fill in an online enquiry or call them up, they are quite helpful and at least it will tell you whether it’s them or the dealer.

I'd definitely approach the DVLA on that.

I signed my Golf over to me last weekend and received the logbook back by Friday.

I can't believe people are still relying on the post for this stuff, especially dealers.

All a dealer needs is a laptop and internet, there's no reason to do it by post anymore is there? Maybe some odd cases?

FWIW, I've just put a plate on retention, signed it over to my other vehicle and all the good stuff that goes with that, and having done it all online, both of my new V5s were back with me within 2/3 working days from pressing the button.

That was last week, so I would suggest, as things stand, their computerised system has no delay at all.

I bought a car privately on Monday last week. Owner told me he would change ownership details on Tuesday morning (wouldn't allow him to do it Monday evening for some reason).

V5 arrived Friday morning.

For whatever reason, the online system only works between 7am and 7pm...

Thanks all - confirms my suspicions!

Will have a chat to the DVLA and then give the dealer a kicking otherwise.

Similar story here. Bought a car last week and had two V5s in less than ten days (private plate admin).

Three days to issue a new V5 following a plate change.

The only delays I’ve had in recent years have all been down to the dealers being woeful at admin and then lying about it, blaming the DVLA.

Does anyone have a contact number for dvla ? Specifically one that will enable me to speak to an actual person...

Haha good luck with that.
I emailed (contacted) the main DfT today to let them know the public switchboard number on their website was 'unobtainable' spin

To be fair though they answered within 90 minutes and said they'd report it and it's working again now spin
I know civil servants etc don't like to speak to the public but does no one even check the 'main governments' telephone numbers actually work biglaugh

We bought a new car (2nd hand from a dealer) last Sat and new V5 arrived about 3 days later smile
Even taxed it whilst stood on forecourt in about 1 minute flat, excellent service smile

Do a normal tax check on the DVLA site, at the bottom of the page is the date of the last V5 change.

I'm a Dealer, I always do it online and new V5's arrive within days.

I'd be 90% sure the Dealer hasn't sent it.

If they have any competence they will have taken a photocopy and with the ref. no. they can still do it online, takes seconds, costs nothing

You might be able to do it from the green section - have a google IIRC there is one digit changed

You can do it yourself online, the V5C document number is the same as the one on the new keeper slip less the last digit (IIRC).

Bought a car from a main dealer in August 2019. Went to get rid of the earlier this year to find I had no V5. Also found out I did not re-tax it in August 2020 as I received no reminder. Managed to re-tax at £0 using the new keepers supplement meaning the DVLA never received the V5 from the dealer, so I applied for a new V5 by sending them the new keeper's supplement and received the V5 within a couple of weeks.
If you decide to get a new V5 using your new keeper's supplement, make sure you take a copy if it first as the DVLA do lose a lot of stuff.
