Just been thinking about this, why London? just imagine how much more fear & terror they could have put into our society if they had bombed a regular small randomly selected British town. Like say my own town of ****** here in *****shire. Just imagine if five bombs had gone off and fifty innocents were killed in plain old anytown, anycounty UK. By selecting London, they have minimalised the impact of fear & terror by a massive degree, because those of us who do not live in the smoke, whilst sympathising with the victims, will still have a feeling of 'it wont happen to us, not out here in the middle of nowhere'.
Maybe the terrorists missed an even nastier trick and opportunity there.

Rush hour at the heart of our nation, I guess - 3M commuters using the Tube each day, packed in like sardines - Guaranteed maximum damage/loss of life/chaos perhaps? How long before the Tube is fully operational again, and what disruption will that cause? Hopefully it will not disuade people from using the Tube.

More publicity, greater possible financial impact, massive disruption, possibility of a higher body count, although fortunately they seem to have failed (relatively speaking) on that front.
Also the Underground and the London bus are regarded throughout the world as prime examples of all things "British".

Yeah, they could have done a small town if they were stupid enough. I have no idea what your small towns are like but in the USA (pop 50K). Everyone knows everyone else. Even if we don't know their names we have seen them before or they seem familiar by knowing their realtives and friends.
Plus that we have nosey biddies about that would take note of middle eastern people that showed up about town other than the ones that already live here.

Spot on, totally agree. The financial markets took an immediate hit. Travel infrastructure completely disrupted and ongoing...etc,etc
