Hi all,

Trying to get a simple answer on this as a lot of detail out there, but cannot see a conclusive answer.

What is the best bang for your book mapping firm (ideally in the south) / do it at home solution?

I am close to making the call on BW Autos near Heathrow, but everyone online talks about JB4 been the best, but if honest, I am struggling to understand all the options you get / have to buy on this. I am sure I can do the fitting etc, but not sure what maps etc I would want, ideally I just want a bolt on / or installed mapping that gives me decent increase in power, but is well tested and relatively safe.

cheers!

Best would be DMS on the south coast. More expensive but tried/ tested and most importantly. They stand behind their warranty.

You've got loads of options

  • Traditional Remap
  • Piggy Back Unit
  • Self mapping via ODBII
They generally work out at similar costs in my experience, £400/£500, and produce broadly similar results. Which one is best depends on what you want. A traditional remap on a rolling road will usually produce the best results if your car is heavily modified, but the other two options have the ability to load custom engine calibrations/maps anyway these days

If you're car is completely standard the off the shelf (OTS) maps from BM3 and MHD are well tested and work well. For these you only need the App on your phone, a wireless ODBII reader and a license (https://mhdtuning.com/). Load the software onto your car, pick a map (e.g. "Stage 1 98 RON") and off you go.

A JB4 is a piggy back unit and requires some fiddling under your bonnet. It's a pain running cables through to the cabin but once installed there are some good options for customisation. JB4s come loaded with OTS maps but you can also load custom tunes onto the unit too.

Personally I went with MHD because of how easy it is. The app is great, support from the developer is good and results from the maps seem strong.

I purchased a super license from MHD for £420 which gave me
  • Flasher Module
  • Map Packs (Stage 0, Stage 1, Stage 2, E85 etc)
You can buy individual maps if you want which is cheaper, but I like the flexibility of moving between maps at different times of the year.

Each time you go up a "stage" the boost targets and timing get more aggressive and hence your engine makes more power.

I have (i now understand aftermarket) a digital dashboard in my car. Because the pairing wasn't done by BWM, they couldn't add the MSPK tune, I assume these aftermarket tunes won't have the same issue?

I like the sound of the MHD tune.

This is slightly off topic buy my 340 with MPPSK came back from a service where they also did a software update (I found out afterwards) and the car has definately lost some of its noise IE pops and bangs and the kickdown is less aggressive.. Its still bloody quick and fairly noisy but I want the thuggery back that has been lost slightly.. I haven't spoken to the dealer as its probably a routine thing to update software at main dealers and I can't imagine it can be undone, Im gonna do some proper googling when I get a chance but it has been brought up on a few forums previously so its defo not in my imagination, I believe it is to do with current EU regulations noise etc.. Car still brill but want my old 340 back, Anyone got anyhing useful to add.

Sorry to piggy back but I started my own thread and got no replies. I have a MY2017 540i. Are the remap options the same or is there differences between the 340i engine and remapping options and the 540i, please?

I have a 540ix as well so interested in this thread. If you look at the MHD website it does list the G30/31 540 as the same unit as the 340. So my guess is that it’s all compatible?

Evolve are highly rated. I believe they are based in Luton.

They are pretty darned good, you can also map your engine/transmission at home via the OBD port using an Enet cable which is quite convenient if you choose. Software and map can be delivered via email.

I think BootMod and MHD both offer the ability to vary the pops and bangs. Check out both.

I read this a few times and was really worried when my MPPSK equipped car went in for it's first service. To my surprise it came out louder than it went in, pops and bangs can be produced on demand now, just drop a couple of gears and it goes mad on the overrun. Strange how others have the opposite experience.

I've also used Simon before, just Google Simon and emaps and do the reading.

That’s amazing. Thank you for posting the graphs and adding all that detail.

Maybe a daft question but can you feel the difference driving it? I had my F10 530 D remapped by Emaps and if I’m honest I couldn’t really tell much difference before and after.

I wish BMW offered the MPPSK map to PPF customers without the exhaust (which obviously doesn't fit). The exhaust (cat back) isn't that restrive on B58 cars, rather it's the downpipe/cat which is. Obviously you can't ditch the PPF and the car remain road legal.

I've had various remapped cars over the years and although more powerful none of them ever felt as smooth as the OEM map, so I think for my 340i I'll end up leaving it as stock in that respect even though I quite like the idea of a decent power hike.

Thanks again for responding. I know exactly what you mean. I did a very unscientific test in my 530 D from a rolling speed of 30, crossed a national speed limit sign onto a motorway and there was another sign further along. Unmapped I could get to 62, remapped I could get to 68. Literally the only way I could tell any difference.

In hindsight, would you still have it? I think I might live with mine stock for a few months and then do it.

It’s a strange problem as the car is so fast as standard. If anything I find it too eager in comfort mode, especially around town. You only have to touch the accelerator and it shoots off. But on the other I like the idea of such a power increase for very little money!

Yes should be, the G32 540i uses the B58 right? So the calibration is largely the same across all the platforms

The MHD website lists the G30 under the B58 F/G flasher

https://mhdtuning.com/products/mhd-super-license-f...

Buy that, get a Wifi Dongle, load the map from your phone and off you go with 420bhp! (or 470bhp if you don't have GPF)

For reference I can DEFINITELY tell the difference in my M135i. Loads more torque. And my N55 engine only goes to ~390bhp.

With a B58 on "stage 2" at 470bhp you'll be quite shocked how much faster it is.
