When I bought my TurboS from an OPC in December, it to my surprise came with a private plate (X666 PTS)

If I put my plate (currently on retention) on the car, will I lose the (PTS) plate currently on the car or does DLVA automatically send you out a retention document?

You'd lose it. To keep the PTS plate, put that one on retention first. Your car will be assigned a random age related plate. Then put your plate on the car.

Bit of a faff if you're doing it via post unless you can do it online?

I’d expect you’d have to retain that plate and get the car put on its original age related plate then transfer yours onto it. Not a definite answer but that’s what I’d expect to have to happen.

I bought a Mini GP1 about 4 years ago and it came with a private plate which was relevant to the car (GP 02 etc). I didn't want the plate as I wanted to put my own plate on the car so just went through the normal process of taking my plate off retention and onto the Mini and didn't take any action regarding the "GP" plate.

When I came to sell the Mini I put my plate back on retention and to my surprise the normal communication you get from the DVLA regarding the plate to put back on the car was the "GP" plate rather than a random age related one. I should add that I know the GP plate was not assigned to the car from new.

Very helpful responses.

Bit of a faff as I need to transfer my congestion charge/residents parking twice then (and require the V5 to do so).

When buying a new car from the opc is it easier to get them to put your private reg on for when you collect or pick it up with the normal reg and do it yourself a day or so later ?
Cheers

When I bought a new Porsche last year I bought the special plate and gave the details to the dealer. The car was then registered by the dealer with that plate. Quite painless really.

Dead easy as the other poster says.

Go to DVLA website and if you want to keep the old reg you will hae to pay to put it on retention.

Then wait a few days for the new V5 and then go online again and assign your own reg.

If you dont mind losing the current reg then ignore step 1.

Enjoy

Was that because the car was originally registered with the "GP02 XXX" plate?

Oddly enough I’m sure I saw a post on Twitter earlier from someone who says they sold a car with this plate on and are trying desperately to locate it and get it back !!

As I mentioned the GP02 plate was not on the car from new. It was initially registered on a 56 plate.

I do apologise- I’ve just found the tweet and it’s similar but not that plate!

Didn't see a 56 plate mentioned. rolleyes

You highlighted it came with a private plate.

My point was the car might have been first registered with that private plate and that may have been why it reverted to that plate.

But obviously not as it had a 56 plate! wink
