Cayenne brake pad replacement

Our pads are running low and I was wondering if the pads can be replaced independent of the discs and if there are any downsides in doing so? Both were changed a couple of years ago and the discs have no 'lip' as such on them. I remember back in the day if you changed pads only you'd have pretty bad breaking till you bedded them in - hows that work for a big SUV?
