Is it still a thing?
I know the Krays would look after your shop and make sure any scallywaggs were seen off back in the 60’s but does it still happen?
I’ve heard of ice cream rounds and window cleaners doing stuff to protect there territory too.
Has anyone an opinion or experience of such things?

Round here it was mostly an issue for the pubs. Most of them are long gone, so I think as a rule its not really a thing any more like it was in the 80s and 90s.
Also a few of the more well known gangs actually set up their own legit security companies about 20 years ago and made more money by being legit! One of the biggest security companies round here is still going and thats exactly where they came from 30ish years ago.
In addition the whole thing was based on targetting cash businesses, and frankly they are also a thing of the past really.

That isn't how it works. You don't pay to protect your business from other people, you pay to protect it from them. The people who romanticise the Krays as these classy common hardcases that protected their community are either delusional or just don't know that they were the lowest form of scum. A couple of classless bullies that terrorised their community and spent their time raping young boys and girls. Thankfully they're both long since in the ground where they belong Kilkerran said:

The Krays were cowards. My grandfather lived in the area for decades before the WW2 & a bit before WW1 as it happens and also for another decade or two after WW2.
They were scum
They were weak
They were so cowardly they couldn’t go to the front line in the War.
They were not loved
They were thugs who prayed on people were extreme violence.
No one liked them - it was dead of reprisal that people made out they liked them.
Good riddance to them and all their ilk

Quite common in London now...a few of the streets in St John’s Wood/Primrose Hill area have private security guards driving up and down at night. When you have enough cash to have a £10mil+ house and you club together with 40 or 50 other households it’s really not that expensive in the grand scheme of things. The residents of Frinton.

I used to live on the road next door...when my M3 had two wheels nicked off it I then used it park it on the road where the security guards were

I think it’s quite well known that they refused to do national service and were jailed instead, and continued to act like absolute scum then, too.
