OK according to forum rules I cannot name and shame a company even if their practices are underhand. But I feel strongly private buyers should be aware of this trick.
I ordered some car parts from an online supplier who's domain was '.co.uk'. Their delivery time was 4-5 business days, it's been 8 business days and nothing has arrived. After some investigation I discovered this online '.co.uk' company is in fact based in Germany, operating out of Berlin!
I specifically wanted to use only a UK based supplier to avoid any orders being snagged up in customs / border shenanigans. Furthermore the items I have ordered are still stuck in Germany at their courier. I dread to think about potential additional costs that might be added once the parts arrive. I think the company should have used a '.co.de' domain as this would warn me that there might be issues and I could have avoided them. I do not know who to complain to and cannot even tell you what the company name is (I did this on the first attempt
and the post was removed). So I guess many more buyers will get caught in this trap. I would like to be more helpful but am not allowed, sorry.

Was this another customer issue with a 'car-based medical practitioner'?

If so, it's been commented on here since January.

If it bothers you that much, cancel the order and buy it from somewhere you know is UK-based.

BTW, you check the company info that's legally required to be displayed on their website - if it's missing then stay away! This is good practice anyway, to help you avoid dodgy websites/companies.

I ordered a car from a .co.uk website and had to wait for it to come from Japan!

Who do I complain to?

I wouldn't bother. From the legendary thread "Chunj - Is this your Ignis?"

I called the Suzuki factory to talk to them about my planned modifications but they shouted something in Japanese, then there were some karate noises and the phone cut off.

So I went to Ripspeed at Halfords instead.

There are plenty of companies that are based outside the UK that use a .co.uk domain to cater for the UK market. There is nothing wrong or underhand with this.

If the location of the company was of such great importance to you, why did you not do the most basic of due diligence checks to find out where it is based before ordering?

I've used this place a few times, granted they may take a week or 2 to deliver but as they are based in Germany, which you can easily see on their about us section I was ok to wait due to the cost of their products.

I've heard of a few delays recently from them though from people, maybe it's Brexit/covid related but previously not had an issue.

I always find it good practice if I'm ordering from somewhere new especially to check their website out and see where they are based/ company registered and reviews etc to make sure they are legit and have decent feedback before spending money.

I'd cancel or get onto their customer services, they have live chat through their app, to sort.

There was an anti Jap Car sticker I remember from the ‘70’s: ‘BUY BLITISH’

If that’s irrelevant to this thread please send a SAE

I know the people you are talking about.

Don’t order anything from them that you need in less than a week. 6 weeks you will be fine.

Much stuff is taking ages to come from Germany at the moment. I had a shipment of some clips come from China, they left China within 4 days, but they were stuck in Duisburg going nowhere for 5 weeks.

Some of the delay is COVID, some of the delay is Brexit and some (read most) of it is due to, I think, they don’t have the stock they say they do.

I’ve had a lot more success with BMW 7 series parts coming from Rockauto in the US. Sometimes I pay VAT/duty and sometimes I don’t… I don’t press the issue…

and this is exactly what I was trying to avoid. When I Fleabay I always tick UK only. When I Gogle I do the same but this still shows. I agree that I can due extra checks but life is already too short. I should be able to rely on the worlds biggest search engine to get it right.

If you car so much about where goods come from you should be willing to do the tiny amount of investigation required to determine where the company is based and not just look at its web address.

Lobotomised or vaccinated? One is more likely thanks to Brexit.

I had bought and paid (including VAT) for something from amazon.de a few weeks ago (I'm in EU), was more than a little miffed when the local authorities added the local equivalent before I could have it delivered as it had been shipped from the UK.
Next time I'll be a bit more vigilant and ask for UK VAT to be taken off before shipping.
