My grandad would be turning in his grave if he saw me chop up wood for the Pizza oven using a kitchen knife.
As a child I spent many hours with my grandad chopping wood, cutting thistles down and generally wielding all kinds of unsuitable sharp tools and instruments.

I have entered at the budget end of the market with a basic yet lovely Amtech 24Oz Axe with fiberglass shaft bought for the princely sum of £5.81 on my staff account at work.

Let's see how the powerfully built other half live then, someone is bound to have a Japanese masterpiece costing thousands.

Nice.

Should I be considering a sharpening stone to keep my £5.81 Axe in tip-top condition?

A decent sharpening tool or stone would cost more than your axe!

Got some ancient hatchet I rescued from a barn somewhere, and a felling axe bought from the local diy shop for log chopping. Sharpening stone is a bit weedy really, I touch them up once or twice a year with the bench grinder and that's it.

I thought the answer to the "which axe?" question is always to recommend Viking axes. biggrin

The one below is technically the wrong type of axe for splitting but it's a handy size for working up a ladder or actually in a tree. As I have it for that purpose, it gets used for splitting the small pieces I need for my firebox. It's a nice length for single or both handed use but you need to have a big log to rest your work on (to stop you bending over and to stop "misses" from hitting your legs).

What no pics?

Here’s my ‘No Bull’ hatchet as it’s indoors & I can’t be arsed to go to the garage to get my axe. The hatchet cost more than your axe!!

I couldn't sell the benefits and merits of the Ooni axe to the Mrs. I even broke the ownership cost down over a 30 yr period but she was having none of it.

Here it is in all its £5.81 glory.

I used Nordic Outdoor to order and have this delivered as a Christmas present to myself ...

The original recommendation for Gransfors Bruk came from an old PH thread. The axe is excellent and I’d recommend Nordic Outdoor.

You'll be waiting for a long time for that.

Just order it online.

My wife gave me this for our wedding anniversary last year...

I probably shouldn't read too much into that, but it's a lovely axe!
