Why's this tyre so expensive?

Is this just for the one tyre? There are others for £138, and then there's this;
GOODYEAR EAGLE F1 GSD3 235X40 R 18INCH Y RATED TO SUIT TVR TAMORA REAR 2001 ON
£261.43 GBP each
Is it a special track tyre?
(not that I'm gonna buy anything of course,,,,, oops, too late!)

Hi Chris,
Mine came fitted with the Goodyears GSD3 as standard from the factory.
They're nothing special as far as I can tell.
As for prices have a look here:

Hiya Chris,
as it happens, the tyre that you are considering is about right for that size and speed rating that you need. The less expensive tyres that you have seen are probably rated at a lower speed than this and whilst it is possible to fit say an S rated (112mph) tyre and save yourself a few quid,if you dont think you will ever exceed that speed, this course of action is highly dangerous as well as being a totally illegal. Of course you arn't just paying for a bit of plastic the more expensive tyres will tend to have more progressive wear rates, better all round performance in the wet and dry and possibly be quieter. Like many things in life it does pay to purchase the best you can afford....thats not to say the less well know brands are not up to th job but it is important to look at the overall spec of the tyre and consider what you need it to do and how you drive.
hope this helps

Hi Eduard, and welcome to PH
Your profile suggests that you work for TVR London - in which case, quite frankly, I would hope that you are not going to patronise the PH regulars, such as Chris who undoubtedly know the difference between an S rated tyre and a Z rated one.
I sincerely hope that "like many things in life it does pay to purchase the best you can afford" is not your standard sales line you peddle when trying to rip people off. Top dollar does not equal top quality.
You should also be aware that the "speed rating" also affects the capability of the tyre to handle forces encountered under acceleration - it is not safe to fit an 'S' rated tyre to a car that will only do 112mph if it will do 0-112 in 4 seconds for example.
It is clear that the tyre spotted by Chris is vastly overpriced (accidently or otherwise) and if we can see that, and you cannot then perhaps I won't be visiting my nearest TVR dealer!
I rarely have a go like this on PH, but your response sends out all the wrong messages (for me anyway). Trying to justify 280 quid for a tyre FFS!

Cheers Paul !
For the record, I would NEVER spend that much on a single tyre, no matter how good it was! I pointed it out because the price was way above anything else on the site, and I just wondered why!
(and paying top dollar, especially for servicing at the 'wrong place' doesnt necessarily mean we get the best possible service, or parts, I know!)

Hello Eduard and welcome to PH. It has perhaps been a baptism of fire but you don't seem to have thought too deeply before posting; something we're probably all guilty of at times. The tyre mentioned was simply way over priced, your scenario does not seem possible to me - try buying a tyre of that size below W rating - and the law would not make such a W tyre illegal.

Hello Paul,
Thank you for your welcome.
Mine was only a personal opinion based on 18 years in the motor industry.....and I am sorry to have to correct you but the price in question was £261.43 not £280.00...at least try and get something right! so far as ripping people off, next time you wish to make such a comment it might be an idea if you consult the widely available tomes relating to English law and libel.
Eduard
Well, if £261 is the correct price for the tyre and £118 is the mytyre price, dont think I will be shopping round your way. Id seriously think about readjusting your prices.

I've seen a few examples of that on the TVR Gear site (lambda sensors and dampers iirc), where there are multiple versions of what appear to be the same item at different prices. I think they need to clean up the listings a bit.

I presumed they were the same mob. Oh well, whoever they are need to re-adjust their prices.

Morning everyone,
thank you all for the welcome, I guess that the tyre trade is far more cut throat than the motor industry after all! makes me happy that all I have to do is sell cars....I dont think I will start selling tyres anytime soon-and at the risk of repeating myself please feel free to offer any suggestions or comments...thats why I came on here, to get feed back and help if I can.Cheers lads and ladies.Ed
Is that an apology?
Anyway best piece of advice on here is to really read each posters comments before replying, lots of people ghave arguments, because what they thought people have said rather than what actually has been said.
OR as in this case.
Tried to defend something, when missing the point entirely. IE why is the SAME tyre (make model, speed rating) TWICE'ish as expensive from one place to another...
Given that you appera to work for a TVR dealer, relly think before you type, as many people will get an impression of your dealership,(rightly or wrongly) before you know it.
Enjoy.

Patronising? Sales patter? As you have so cleverly worked out, I do work at TVR London...we sell motor cars...not tyres,so it really makes no difference to me which brand of tyres that anyone buys, I wasn'trying to justify their pricing....I was simply trying to suggest that whilst there are many less expensive brands out there, it IS important to consider how your car is going to be driven and wear rates grip etc and wether you like it or not,if some one isn't totally familiar with the ins and outs of tyre ratings, brands etc them I am so sorry but as far as tyres are concerned as a good rule the more expensive brands ARE the better ones......we are not talking about buying tyres for a mini...as for my employment...condsidering that you know nothing about me and I assume have had no personal dealings with me,leave your personal comments to yourself! I came on to this site because I thought I may be in a position to offer some of the little experience I have gained over the last 18 years...come down and see who I am and have a chat and a visit and a coffee...sorry that I sell cars for a living...thats what I do! Please form your opinion of me after you have met me! Anyhow, If my opinion wasn't agreed with, that's ok-it's a free country!
I look forward to seeing you....and any one who wants to pop in and say Hi.
Eduard
As you have 18 years of experience, I'm sure that you have never SOLD anything ever, than the minimum price you were prepared to let it go at. Every customer has haggled you down until you bleedd cash
I would also expect that someone with 18 years of experience ( you do mention that more than once) to be able to deal with people better than this post suggests, as People WILL form an opinion of you , before they meet you, and WILL probably think I'm not going near that place, they sound really patronising - I'm off somewhere else.
The internet is the real world and people think that they have MET you, ie what you say in ANY medium is an indication of your personality.
Threatening libel is not the way to win friends and customers? when you if you hadn't missed the point realised you had been wrong .
Lots of tvr dealers sell customers new tyres, and ALL MANUFACTURERS dealers are known to not to the cheapest, thats why people shop around.... AS i'm sure anyone with 18 years experience in the car? selling? industry would be able to tell you
WAY to agressive reply there, doubt that you would do that face to face or in a pub.
Or dare I say it car showroom
ALL of course in my humble opinion, i may be right i may be wrong, but I'm not in a position of selling new cars to people
a lot of whom are on this website. A quick look at the people posting in this topic alone, shows 80-90% have currenly TVR's or sports cars. ie potential customers? How are things going with TVR, what is the most popular model at the moment... The sagaris seem to me to be selling far better than I thought.
And I would like a Tusc 2, but an waiting to have a good look at the convertible version before i make my mind up (am leaning towards the coupe though). When are the convertible demonstrators going to be available.
Best of luck with the business

When I had my wheels refurbed they used Protyre for removing/fitting tyres, just down the road from you.
New front and rear GOODYEAR EAGLE F1 GSD3 were £110 fully fitted front or back and were Y rated.

Thanks for the feedback
That price is wrong and will be changed.
We haven't officially re-launched yet as we hoped the good folk of Pistonheads would help us road test it for a while. As a result of the feedback we now building a section for brakes for each model.
This should start to build over the next few days.
Please let us know anything else you find.
