Hey all,

Getting rid of my pride and joy for more sensible car, been thinking about either 635d or 640d.

After having a good look through Autotrader, found two potential cars.

One is 10 plate 635d with around 80k on clock for just under 10k.

The other one is 62 plate 640d coupe with around 80k miles but specced out very nicely for just under 15k.

- What are people's experiences with these cars, any issues?
- Is it worth spending another 5k to get the 640d instead of 635d?
- Any must have's spec wise that I should look for?

Cheers

Ordinarily I'd say the price difference is not justified as they are identical engines with mildly different mapping (all other things being equal)

However I suspect you are comparing a late E63/4 6-series with an early F12/13 6-series.

In which case it is a no-brainer to go with the more recent version of the car.

I did 70k miles in a 2012 640d without any issues(although I did swap the runflats on the 20" wheels for normal tyres and I suffered from 3 punctures so I wouldn't that again). The ride is punishing with the 20" wheels with the runflats over pot holes/rough surfaces(fine on smooth tarmac though), so if I had another one I'd for the 19" wheels.

I loved the way my F13 640d looked so I'd definitely go for that, I've never liked the Chris Bangle designed 6 series so that would rule the 635d out for me.

It would be the 640d as it's just a nicer place to be.

A mate of mine had a 640d for a while. It was a lovely car, good pull and generally a nice place to be. I drove it a couple of times (on A roads not around a track, so may not be great driving feedback) but it handled and drove nicely for a big car. I’d lean towards the 640, over the 635

I’ve got a 640d. Absolutely no issues in the year that I’ve had it, although consumables are expensive. For example front brake discs and pads are £450 for genuine BMW items, but still about £350 for aftermarket. I can imagine engine issues will result in big bills, but I’ve not had any.

It’s not a sporty engine. Even in sport mode it’s fairly lazy, but very capable and can rev like a diesel Ive never driven. You can tell its been made to cross continents. You can get out after a 4 hour drive and not even feel it.
