Hope they'll be donating some of that money to the victims of his crimes.
$500k going to be donated towards Community improvement. It seems quite high to me but hopefully it will make Police Departments across the US out in place processes to avoid this happening again.

yes odd. The settlement will have taxes and legal fees. I don't think any amount of money can replace a loss, and even though he wasn't the most honest person, he no way deserved to die, and the comments on here are very odd, as usual. There was an interesting article on Minneapolis on Newsnight the other day.
Support withdrawn for the police, 25% of police officers have either left the force or are off sick.
Killings have gone up (community on community) and crime is all over the place. "Local neighbourhood" policing is being done apparently...and there are places that actual law enforcement don't go.
FUBARd.

First paragraph states they paid the money to avoid a civil wrongful death trial.
I guess the city could have decided not to pay and take it to trial. You'd think they had Lawyers advising them to make the payout.
Yup.I guess the city could have decided not to pay and take it to trial. You'd think they had Lawyers advising them to make the payout.
Some posters really need to look up how Civil trials work in USA.
There’s no real direct comparison in UK but so you understand, you’ve the same jury as a criminal trial, deciding not beyond reasonable doubt but on the balance of probabilities.
I’d probably be getting very nervous if I was the Attorney General.
Claim probably started at couple hundred million and reduced to $27 after a bit of negotiating.
The film Erin Brockovich gives a pretty good idea why they want to settle out of Court.
Unlike the film, I’d guess that irrespective of previous history, the footage of being choked and killed rather sort of makes it a bit difficult to argue it wasn’t, on the balance of probabilities, an accident or justifiable.
US juries also set the financial punishment. Not the Judge. They go a bit crazy sometimes.

I'm sure this is just another qanon, trump-lovvin' antagonist, so can be ignored:Support withdrawn for the police, 25% of police officers have either left the force or are off sick.

The George Floyd memorial is an "autonomous zone" with several blocks controlled by activists. Police don't even go in. We tried to respectfully get video-but left after two people confronted us near the barricades.
Later learned many protestors don't even feel comfortable there.

That’s what happens when ‘Policing by Consent’ takes a back step to ‘Policing by Force’Support withdrawn for the police, 25% of police officers have either left the force or are off sick.

If the communities are killing each other on an increasing basis now police presence has been radically reduced, doesn't it raise the question on how on earth do you police by consent in such a toxic atmosphere? There is no way on earth I would want to be a police officer there.
And how are the US at large going to deal with it? With such losses in officers, how long will it be before there are none there and that the "autonomous zones" expand to consume the whole city? What then? Just let the killing and crime continue to get out of control.
It's a mess. But what was the chicken, and what the egg?

What exactly did you mean to convey when you chose this sentence as a summary of that article? Not saying that the policeman should’ve done what he did but it’s no great loss to the world and the funeral service with a picture of him with a halo as if he was a good guy was sickening.
