Marvellous Marvin RIP
Discussion
Apologies if I missed the thread on this, but news today or the seemingly shock death of ‘Marvellous’ Marvin Haggler.
Growing up in an era when boxing was so huge and seemingly less contrived as it can be nowadays, this guy was an unbelievable fighter, and his battle with Hitman Hearns was one of the most explosive fights I’ve ever seen! Epic stuff and a legendary fight along with a few others that I can recall decades later.
RIP Marvellous Marvin, a true heavyweight of boxing despite his 72.5kg!

Sad news indeed
In that "golden" decade of boxing, that included Hearns, S-R Leonard and Duran, Hagler was by far my favourite
I'm 56 years old and try not to fall in the trap of saying that things were better in the old days. But boxing was better back then. Especially the middle-weights. Totally brilliant. I agree that Hagler was probably the best but SRL was a legend too. In that "golden" decade of boxing, that included Hearns, S-R Leonard and Duran, Hagler was by far my favourite

I'm 58. Love boxing now, but you're right about the middleweights back then. I loved the SR Leonard / Duran battles. Duran was just a street brawler, SRL was a cultured boxer, great clash of styles. And as said Hagler v Hearns.
Duran was so much more than a street brawler, perhaps the greatest lightweight who ever laced them up. RIP Marvellous Marvin...and that was legally his name!!biggbn said:

I missed that era but have watched the fights back. I still reckon this is a quote for the ages "It's tough to get out of bed to do roadwork at 5am when you've been sleeping in silk pyjamas."
Used the same quote in the boxing thread!oddman said:
Benn, Eubank and (my favourite) Graham in the same era
Great time for middleweight and great boxers
Coming from Sheffield I always wanted Graham to win big. So nearly.Great time for middleweight and great boxers
My one lasting memory of him was him getting knocked out and being out of it before he hit the floor against Julian Jackson.
He struck me as one of those boxers who was too "nice" in terms of finishing opponents off (Bruno the same).
Benn, Eubank and Collins were the pick from this side of the Atlantic in that era. Their fights were brutal. Edited to add, Watson was some boxer too.

The above boxers were all good but to mention them in the same sentence as Hagler, Hearns, S-R Leonard and Duran is stretching it somewhat.Great time for middleweight and great boxers
