Wonder how long before the rest of the UK copy...

My girl just got an email saying they are giving her £500 extra take home as a thankyou.

£500 buys you a 2 bed terrace and some towns. They'll live like royalty.

How about all the other people who have worked tirelessly in essential jobs?

As the other poster said its up to the employer. Some are though, I know DHL gave all their European employees as bonus late last year for their work through the pandemic.

After all the spunking of money on furlough I don't see any problem rewarding NHS front line staff for their efforts.

Scotland did this in December last year so I would say Wales copied Wee Jimmy Krankie smile

The issue comes with the description of 'front line staff'. Is it:-

Those who treated the Covid patients on the Covid wards
Those who worked through the pandemic manning A&E and other services
Those who cleaned the hospital
Those in management and finance roles who ensured everybody got paid
Those who ran around in blind incompetence as they failed to secure any PPE orders, or
Those who claimed to be vulnerable and have sat on their backsides 'working from home' for 12 months whilst their colleagues worked through, making the occasional 'essential' telephone call.

For me it needs to be either all the NHS, or not at all, as anything directed to 'front line' would be divisive. IMHO it just looks like a pointless PR exercise to buy a few votes after the 1% furores.

The 1% is an England thing, NHS Wales payrise is set by the Welsh Senedd, and afaik they havent decided yet

With elections coming up it’s not surprising, it’ll buy a lot of votes.

It HAS to be everyone otherwise it'll get (even more) political.

The numerical percentage will never be agreed on. It will never be enough for someone like Jonathan Ashworth.

"You want to give them a 25% pay rise? I say give them 50%. Why do you hate nurses so much?"

Of the NHS? If you think being a tax payer makes you an NHS employer then that's a very juvenile position.

I find the phrase "essential worker" slightly irritating - yes my job isn't really essential, but I have worked tirelessly for the last year just like so many others (and with added financial pressures). It definitely has not been a case of laying in bed watching boxsets all day! If anything I've been under more pressure picking up the slack of others who are not quite so dilligent..

BTW Paulw123 - please don't think this is a moan at you personally - it is not.

It is essential to you, your family, and your mortgage provider.

That should be sufficient.

Sick of this "key worker" snobbery. I consider myself as important as a key worker. I can't be furloughed, I need to work on site, if I dont work I risk losing my home.

Well yes quite right - I was defining it as "not essential" based on the definition that only those on the front line battling against covid are essential and the rest of us can go hang.
