The latest HMRC cock up appears to be postponed VAT. We purposefully didn't sign up for it as we were quite happy with the deferment scheme, however some carriers seem to have got around this and have used postponed VAT when doing our customs entries.

We are now doing our MTD vat return to end February and HMRC have admitted that we need to guess our postponed VAT amounts and alter boxes 1 and 4 on the return:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/complete-your-vat-retu...

That's all very well but as we are no longer allowed to write the VAT return out with a ballpoint pen how do they expect us to doctor the return?

That rather depends on your accounts system.

The report produced is turned into an excel file and submitted using bridging software. The concept of postponed VAT does not exist yet, deferred was fine as it is just another invoice that gets paid, postponed seems to be completely ethereal.

And yes I know I can cheat and just change the numbers but HMRC themselves warn you not to do that.

You can make the adjustments in Excel; that is allowed. So something like this:

That's a valid digital link. HMRC accept that sometimes calculations might have to be made outside of your accounting system. As long as you can show your workings in a digital format they will be happy.

I have found it incredibly easy using TaxCalc’s VATfiler.

That’s what I use. Only £20 per year (although still £20 per year more than I was paying before, which I begrudge).
