Hi Guys 1st time poster so apologies if this is a well worn subject.

I have 30kish around to spend on a used Luxury SUV, liking Q7 / Merc Gle / RR Velar.

Looking on Autotrader looks like I can pickup a decent 2017 GLE for around 25k therefore is it worth the extra 5k for Q7/Velar?

I play golf and have a Dog / Kids so need boot space.

Any thoughts or pro's & Cons would be much appreciated .

Cheers

The Velar for that budget is truly style over substance with a 4 pot 178 bhp diesel engine, and the most expensive of the 3 to buy.

If you can get past the Q7 shape (I can't) its a spacious option, but for me the 3.0 GLE350d V6 AMG Line G-Tronic 4MATIC is the pick of them and also best value.

....though I'd probably go for a Cayenne in your shoes even if it was a year older (and save for a little longer to get the V8 diesel!)

Would take an X5 over any of the ones you mentioned.

For example

Drives much better than the Audi or Merc, the Velar is much smaller and you always have to worry about reliability with LR unfortunately. If you haggle a bit you might get a 40d, although the 30d is adequately powerful. 50i's are intriguingly cheap.....

2017 Luxury SUV for 30k ish?

Lexus RX450h is what you want. Unless you want to drive your 2 ton SUV like a 205gti.
Lovely for wafting about in and built better than pretty much anything at any price.

If you can stretch the budget & haggle then the Maserati Levante is a very nice place to be:

This. Friend of mine had a Levante Diesel which I drove and can confirm it's a great drive. He liked it so much that he just upgraded to a Levante Petrol. The petrol is a different animal but the Diesel is also one fine machine. The noise on the Diesel itself is different to all other options you are thinking about!

The Levante is growing on me. As a Ghibli and former 4200 CC owner I was somewhat disdainful of the Levante's concept initially.

How does it sit in terms of ride/handling balance?
Is it better than the Stelvio?

Not sure whether you class it as luxury, but my money would be going on a XC90.

What about the Merc GL a beast of an SUV or the G Wagon proper off-roader and so cool.

I really like the GLE and GLS, I’d have a GLE over a Velar any day.
GLS over a FFRR though?, that would be a much tougher decision.

I found the ride quite smooth as it’s got air suspension. And that exhaust.... He put it in sports and the car lowered a bit. It’s quite cosy inside and you don’t feel like you are in an SUV. Can’t say about the Stelvio as I haven’t driven it but another friend has one and he goes to his hometown in Italy twice a year from London. He absolutely loves it and can’t stop smiling when we talk about it (though I think that’s the Italian in him!). Another friend has a Stelvio QF which is just bonkers. I only sat in it for a brief ride and that thing is crazy. Money no object I would buy that with closed eyes.
Money being an object I would buy the Levante.
