Has the job really changed?

Or is it just harder to maintain the standards expected of them at a time when everything is on camera?

I'm afraid this is another one of those pieces where it reads too damn well for me to think it's just a bloke writing it - I can't help but read it as a PR release.

Not saying the job isn't like that, or it's a misrepresentation, but for me it's too polished and tied up in a bow to take at face value.

Nearly 5 years retired but still keep an eye out for what's going on as best I can. From reading that I just wonder how he's lasted 20 years. We've all had experience of the points he raises. Some people are affected more than others. I lost count of how many Home Secretaries and Chief Constables I had - all with different agendas. I was just happy to do my job to the best of my ability and survive to enjoy my life outside the job.

I know things change - as the old hands said to me when I joined "The jobs not the same anymore." Well it' s certainly not a job that suits everyone but it's still a better choice than some.

He must have been on some nice project for the previous 19 years before getting out back on shift...

The job being difficult and st is hardly news to any of us.

They've been saying the jobs dead since the end of the very first early turn....

I know a few ex and current plod and they seem to say the same thing that in general its no worse in what you see but its just generally worse all round as there is more of it. Dealing with more idiots, etc dealing with more MH cases etc etc.

I imagine thats just a general reflection of society being full of increasingly selfish and moronic individuals rather than a reflection on policing itself.

To be fair, I sometimes have to deal with human beings in my job and since lockdown, its just full of bile and complete assholes much worth both in terms of numbers and intensity of thier asshole behaviour.

I wont buy into that covid is a "reasonable" excuse for it as simply it isnt. Just because of covid stressing people doesnt make it ok to be an asshole. I suspect the reality is they were always assholes and just needed covid to come out the closet with such asshole behaviour.

Quite frankly if all those customers acting like that died, i wouldn't loose a wink of sleep over it.

Police in general have my support for doing a tough job that most of the rest of us couldn’t or wouldn’t be able to do.

That being said, I’m not sure it’s a bad thing that someone who comes across as a misanthrope has decided to leave his public-facing role.

Society as a whole has changed and as a society people's behaviour has changed so its not a stretch to imagine the way it has to be policed has changed.

I did watch the Bristol Riots Sunday night live online. Yes I know that's sad. One thing I did notice is that the Police showed great restraint when really a good deal of brutality would not have gone amiss.

Perhaps all the huggy, wellbeing procedures are wrong. These were just mindless bored thugs "protesting" most of whom have never seen any discipline in their life and been told day to day that they are "amazing and brilliant".

It sums up exactly how I feel at the minute 24 years in. At the moment I’ve stuck a load of accrued time of in to try and sort my head out because the last few months have been so negative at work.

I've passed a medical from HMG and have to do a bit more than that to exceed the minimum standard every year.... As well as quite a lengthy slide pack of equality, equity and diversity laugh

Ill-judged use of the word "Nazis" aside, I can see his point...there ARE those on the far left who delight in the violence, in the destruction*. Different motivations, but very similar attitudes to the thugs on the far right.

Off-topic slightly, but I'd go further...to me, the overly-idealistic, blinkered and hate-filled far left have been a bigger enabler of the autocratic right than anyone else, as:-
- they undermine legitimate, peaceful protests
- they can be used as a poster-child to justify anti-democratic law changes
- THEY are the ones that morphed SWP into Momentum, took over the Labour Party from the inside, put their (totally unelectable) puppet at the top and tried to turn it from a true opposition into some pathetic mass protest movement because that's all they know, and because they're too fking blinkered to see (a) their policies aren't wanted by the majority; and (b) by removing any genuine political balance, they give the Tories carte blanche to put all sorts of laws through without problem.

I think the issue is that they have to follow the orders of the day (at least I presume that's the case) ie it's ridiculous to be heavy handed on a peaceful group of middle aged women and it's ridiculous to go easy on a violent mob
