Help on potential Griff purchase.......
Discussion
Went to view a Griff 4litre last night. Car seemed to drive fine. Firstly let it idle, the oil pressure was low on the gauge to 10. After a minute or 2 it was about 10-15. After about 5-8 mins went out for a test drive,as i say it drove fine,IMO.
Drove the car for about 3 miles or so, at which point the oil pressure started toget up to 30. Temperature gauge went a couple of notches above 90.
Another 3 miles back and the car was parked up and left to idle. The fans were running, the gauge was about 90 and the oil about 30, after another few minutes the fans cut out.
The car was left idling for about another 15 minutes while we went through the paperwork.
After all this time got back to looking at the car, at which point, white smoke had started to appear from the exhaust, nore so from the passenger side.Temperature was still at 90. The smoke appeared to lessen as the car was revved slightly until there was nothing.......
Read a few threads here last night, and I guess its sounding like it could be either head gasket, cracked head/s, possibly a ring, or in an ideal scenario, none of the above and condensation......
Is there anyone who can offer any more advice upon this, or should i be looking to lend someones barge pole :scratchchin:

That oil pressure sounds a bit strange, it should be 25-30 psi at tickover, rising to 40 psi + when you rev the engine. Normally the oil pressure would be highest with a cold engine and gradually drop off as the engine heats up.
White smoke could be condensation if the exhaust is cold, but not likely if the engine has been driven six miles and idling for half an hour or so. I'd want to investigate further before committing any money. It would be sensible to have the car inspected in any case.

Mmmmm.OK So that should be OK,possibly. I got this info on the oil pressure from a link on a site through www.thegriffithpages.com/
Just thinking it through a bit more, Is there any particular reason why it only smoked when warm? Could it be a light blue smoke, tha looks whitish - if thats not sounding stoopid
Is VSOS a possibility....My previous Audi had leaky ones and would smoke big time if it was sat in a traffic jam idling.........
Getting back to coolant loss, can the block itself give any issues, like needing bores relined, or are the 4.0 litre blocks less prone to this? I recall reading in the history that a few thousand miles ago that it had had a cylinder leakage test/pressure test(?) and they all came back as OK and with a reading of ~170 - all of them......
If i was to go back for another look at the car, would it be possible to check any pressures with anything, or is there any definitive way of checking if the headgasket may have gone, obviously looking in the filler cap for the usual milky gunge/oil, or is there any other pointers that i should be looking at?
Just trying to pin this down even more.......
Cheers.......

I'm using Mobil 1 0W40.
Would anyone recomend using a different type of oil?
Could this be the cause of the slight tapping I'm getting as the revs drop off. Its not the cam/followers as these have been replaced recently.
Was told it could be the rocker covers??
Just wondering if I use a thicker oil this may stop?
Sorry for high-jacking the thread!
