We're recruiting our first electrician and having some challenges in finding enough applicants despite paying well. Oddly some seem to be on far less money than we're offering and yet we're just not seeing them Surrey/Hants).

Am I missing something?

Electricians very much get hired by word of mouth, none of the ones I know, both employed or self employed have ever actually applied for a job, they always hear about them through others on sites they are working, most decent electricians aren't short of work and the employed ones seems to be quite happy with their lot.

Where are you advertising ?

What sort of electrician are you looking for. Domestic, industrial installations, break fix, site work , it's a very broad industry.

We're an EV specialist so mostly domestic installs but some 3ph commercial (although we have a contractor team) so nothing specialist.

Have you tried here

https://www.electriciansforums.net/forums/electric...

I haven't seen your advert but EV installs are still newish for some electricians so maybe genuine offer of accredited industry recognised training, on going support, other perks holidays, bonus, overtime, ongoing development etc.... The industry is busy hence lack of applications as employed sparks may not want to change companies during the lockdown and ongoing job security.

If I was looking for work I would tend to ask around and look on company web sites/FB etc.. Speak to other companies they may be holding CV'S or looking to off load sparks and could pass your details on??

Good Luck

Maybe they aren’t applying because they struggle with reading the job advert and understanding where the the job is?

I'm not sure what you mean. They can't read a job advert?

I do go on there but it's a national site. Even with a locally focussed advert we had people from all over the UK applying who thought they could just do the work in their area.

We've got training ,paid holidays etc

Tried local FB page so far and we get the odd approach.

Yes, that's what we find, electricians are either poor quality self employed and struggling, good quality and over run with work or the type who just want a job/salary. We are looking for the latter.

A lot of electricians are busy working on the implementation of new safety standards for rentals. It all has to be done by the end of April.

We’ve had 30 sparks working on it.

You will get a very different response in May.

Thanks, well you're a bit larger than us then. Might be worth us holding off...

The issue is there are a lot out there who are clueless.

Even these so called "Gold Card" electricians! All mine work on there own, so there is nowhere to hide.

We've had maybe 10 over the last year who didn't make it till the end of the first week. All qualified, said they could do the job but
clearly couldn't. This is basic domestic work. Shocking.

The industry is not in a good state.

It’s pretty clear where the job is based from your 1st post and yet it was still asked!

Yes, we had people from the NW, Midlands and Norwich! Some thought that they could just do the job in their area. Some didn't think at all rolleyes

Still, 2 to interview next week...let's see...

Sparks generally want to be self employed and subcontracting, that way they're not tied to working for a bad boss with unrealistic demands, they can cherry pick their jobs, work the hours they want, and they can earn a decent wage.
