There's probably not much love nor interest for a mildly fast Audi here but I like them. I don't profess to be a talented driver so something which is four wheel drive, reasonably quick, neutral and with a likelihood to understeer rather than oversteer suits me down to the ground.

I've had Audi's in the past starting with a Mk1 TT and from then a C6 S6 5.2 V10 saloon, another 5.2 V10 S6 avant and then a D4 A8 3.0tfsi. More recently I had a 2007 Cayenne S with the 4.8 V8 engine. I had that for a couple of years before selling that to a mate and buying the current S6. I really wanted an S8 however facelift D4 were thin on the ground. I then found this S6 being sold privately a mere 10 miles away from me. Most of my cars have been bought privately. I like to meet the owners and you can gauge the type of person they are and hopefully form a view on how the car has been treated and maintained.

The engine is a 4.0 twin turbo. Same as the one used in the RS6/RS7 and other VAG cars such as the Bentley Continental and Lamborghini Urus. Given that this car kicks out the least power (450bhp), it has been fitted with the dual clutch s tonic gearbox whereas the RS6 has the 8 speed ZF gearbox to handle the greater torque. The other difference between the engines is the RS6 has different turbos than the S6.

Onto some pictures:

The colour is tornado grey which is a dark silver.

Modifications wise, I've fitted a Maxton Design front splitter, 20" Audi S8 Plus wheels with Pirelli P Zero tyres, rear diffuser repainted in gloss black, Stage 1 remap by DMS, callipers repainted in gloss black with new S6 decals and finally a flat bottomed heated steering wheel in perforated leather. I have been advised that this is the only heated flat bottomed wheel in the UK!

Maintenance wise since I've had the car it's had, oil and filter change, air filter change, pollen filter change and new NGK spark plugs.

All maintenance was undertaken by myself (I'm lucky that I have a good friend who lets me use his garage and ramps though!). All mods were fitted by myself too apart from painting the rear diffuser.

The remap has bought the power up to circa 550bhp. I've got a Dragy timing unit and have done a few 0-60 runs the quickest of which is 3.7 seconds. I've not used there launch control option yet so I'm hoping that the time should go under 3.5 seconds.

I do like these. Have looked at them many times. Rare car too.
Will the dsg handle the power lift then?

I’d prefer to have an RS6 with the ZF gearbox but life is full of (financial) compromises!

The previous owner had the gearbox oil changed as a preventative measure by Audi. The fixed cost was £249. I’d hope that would help preserve it. Also in the US where the RS6 isn’t sold, there are a lot of S6 owners running big power gains without any problems with the gearbox.

As an aside, it seems that the biggest problems that owners of cars with this engine face is a 10p sized oil screen that can get clogged up causing the turbos to run with little or no oil. Some owners have fitted a revised part or removed it altogether. I just plan to ensure I use decent oil and change it every six months.

Absolutely love these, very under the radar and not many people know they exist.

I would love one at some point to replace my Skoda Superb 280 4x4 as in some ways its a similar car!

Love it, classy unlike the chav chariot that the RS6 is. Didn’t actually realise they had made a s6 in this generation!

To be honest, I don’t have any other firm plans for it. I’m quite happy with how it is at the moment. All I want to do is drive it more. It’s my second car. My daily driver is a 2006 Ford Mondeo 2.0 diesel. I live in Manchester City centre and the Mondeo is always parked across the road in an NCP. The S6 is in a secure car park a 10 minute walk away which means I only really drive it at the weekends.

If the weather stays ok at the weekend, I might give it a clay, polish and wax.

Long term, possibly an intake kit to help the engine breath and give it a little more noise. As it is, the car is pretty quiet with the standard exhaust.

Great car. Does it have air suspension and the same diff as the RS6?

Yes it’s got drive select, air suspension, and sport diff with torque vectoring. I presume it’s the same as the RS6 system.

Lovely car, very nice and understated.

I completely agree with you about buying a car privately and getting to meet the seller / owner. If a person looks after their property, speaks with enthusiasm about the vehicle, it will (the majority of the time) feed through to how they treat and maintain that vehicle. I would prefer to buy a car that has been loved.

I bought one of these new in 2017. I would have bought a Mercedes E500 if they made one, but they didn't.

I wasn't a fan of the RS6, it's a bit shouty and in your face. I did want a largish capacity petrol engine though, test drove an S6 and I was immediately sold.

I also liked the fact I could paint it any colour I like, something Mercedes just won't do without a fight, then when they do agree the cost is simply daft.

Here's mine, in Orange Flame metallic. Completely subtle.....

Ooo - that’s a result. The difference between that and standard A6 suspension cannot be overstated.

Very nice. I've been keeping an eye on the Avant versions for a while. With my post-lockdown working pattern now looking like it'll be 2 days a week in the office, one of these might just be doable.

How do you find the noise? I've read that you really need the sports exhaust or an aftermarket to wake them up.

Lovely colour. Having the wheels refinished in dark silver or a light grey would set that off brilliantly.

It’s a nice noise but very subtle. I’ve got the sport exhaust with the flaps which open and close dependant on the driving mode but I still find it very quiet. I used to have a 5.2 V10 S6 and fitted a Milltek non res. That sounded awesome but I was a lot younger back then. Being the wrong side of 40 means that I’m quite conscious of driving a loud car. A good (and cheap) compromise would be removal of the two resonators and replacement with an X pipe.

BTW, that awful chrome strip at the bottom of the boot is held on with a double sided sticky pad, I had it removed from my car, it just looks wrong, especially on the estate.

Contrary to your original statement, I've got a real passion for the S6 and chose an S6 over an RS6 on the basis it is vastly more discrete.

The RS6 has pumped up wheel arches and instantly identifiable on the roads, I have heard of quite a few being the target of unwanted attention as they're such capable machines.

In contrast, the S6 slips into the traffic, offers exceptional comfort and more than sufficient power. Apparently, running one on VPower alone can yield 480bhp from the stock ECU.

Subtle, exceedingly comfortable and crucially, available as a saloon (rather than an old man estate car), they make a very pleasant place to cover a great number of miles.

I look forward to hearing more about yours - have you organised the gearbox tune to match the engine tune? Should help maintain the life of your clutch. I'm nervous about a map on the basis I want the factory warranty intact just in case I face the bork factor in future.

I’ve got the fishing line at home today to cut it off. I hate it too. Makes the back of the car look like a Vauxhall Vectra. Thanks for confirming it’s just double sided tape. Someone on another forum said it was held on with clips which would leave holes in the tailgate. I didn’t really believe him.

Awesome. Power like that in quite an under stated and non shouty package like the S6 is so appealing to me. A set of downpipes and a stage 2 map on that would give some real nice figures.. i told myself i wouldnt do it ot my E63s but did it last week and havent regretted it .

How did you find the 5.2 v10 of the previous S6? And compared to the 4.0tt in yours now? Must have sounded glorious at full chat.

The V10 sounded a lot better than the V8 as I had a Milltek exhaust on the saloon. However both are pretty muted when stock. The V10 is very dated now and isn’t very powerful when compared to the later V8. I think the 0-60 time of the older car is circa 5 seconds which isn’t very fast when compared to current hot hatches.

The V10 is however a lot easier to work on. You have access to all 10 coil packs and spark plugs with little need to remove anything to get to them. I recently did the spark plugs on the V8 and you have to remove the air box and intake on ones side of the engine to do that bank. The other side requires the coolant reservoir to be moved out of the way. Also, before you get to the coil packs, each cylinder has two solenoids which are part of the cylinder de activation system. These also have to be moved out of the way.

I'll be looking closely at one of those once they've depreciated a little more.
My S4 Avant isn't quite large enough!
