SmartThings and Philips Hue

Is anyone using Philips Hue with SmartThings?
I have a Hue bulb (plus Hue Bridge and Hue Button) and Nanoleaf Canvas and decided to try and hook them together using SmartThings.
I've set up an automation so that when the Hue bulb goes on, the Nanoleaf Canvas goes on. And when the bulb goes off, the Canvas goes off.
Works fine from the SmartThings app. But when I try and turn things off from the Hue app, or more pertinently using the Hue Button, it doesn't work.
If I then go into the SmartThings app and check the Linked Services (the Hue), the automation kicks in.
What seems to be missing is SmartThings getting status updates from the Hue set up. Googling suggests it should do this at least every 5mins, but I can't work out if the setup needs a SmartThings hub for that to happen. So was wondering if anyone is using SmartThings with Philips Hue and how it's working.
