Windscreen replacement on my 996
Discussion
Got a new windscreen for the 996tt - Contacted my insurance company, asked them about the claim process and the broker said to me I was better off going to the OPC or specialist fitter. I was surprised at that. They said I was responsible for the first £100 instead of £60. I started looking up why it was important to go OE. Tales of woe; leaky windscreens and fitters that were penalised if they didn't meet targets abound. So I looked at alternatives, it was either going to be Porsche Brooklands or an indy.
I've found that it's important to impart the idea that you care for your car and ask the right questions when the fitter from the big suppliers turn up. All the times I've done this, they've taken care and done a good job. I've only had one dud screen and that was after a bodged accident repair years ago.
I went with Paul @ Glasstec. I left him a message and he responded pretty quickly. The first screen was delivered to his local OPC, but it was clear the manufacturer (Sekurit) had an off day. The embedded antenna was offcentre by about 12mm and he rejected it. The replacement arrived about 8 days later and was deemed ok - within reasonable tolerances.
My existing windscreen was OE, but it was clear it'd been a replacement as some of the screws for the plastic work was colour matched. He also gave me an opportunity to treat the plastic scuttle so it took the 19 years of sun damage grey back to black.
Paul was very accommodating and helped me refit the handsfree mic and route a pair of dash cam cables when the screen was out. Something that would've taken me half a day probably with lots of swearing. He took great care in avoiding scratches etc and came across as a genuine car guy.
It's not supposed to be an advert for his services, but I know it's not easy to find someone good to work on your car.
Any how, new sparkly windscreen is fitted now and the car is starting to look a lot fresher. I've got various other black plastic bits to remove and treat, including a new aero front splitter that will replace the C4S/ standard turbo splitter. I guess the previous keeper got fed up of the original catching on kerbstones etc.

Going through the process of trying to sort a new OE screen for mine, Admiral charge £115 excess and do through Autoglass. Got a quote for OE from Autoglass and they want £736 odd inc VAT and my excess to do the job, so I'm now waiting to hear on admiral how much they're contributing.
Out of interest, do you know the cost of the glass you had?

736 + 115 + whatever their agreed average invoice value with Admiral is = probably into four figures. Not bad for a moody screen fitted by someone who probably has never worked on a 996 before.

National Windscreens did mine.
Perfect job; the fitter said he had done quite a few Boxsters / 911s. I guess it’s luck of the draw really.
I specifically asked for Saint-Gobain glass. No issue at all. IIRC the fitter said the glass cost about £950 for my car. Only charged me £60 excess instead of £90 as stated on my policy documents.
