I think my computer is running background programmes. The hard drive sounds like it's doing a lot of work.
I regularly run both Spybot and Adaware but this does't seem to have made any difference.

How can I find out what programmes are running?

I'm runing XP Home Edition

Right click on the bottom task bar -> Task Manager -> Processes tab.

Any you're unsure of just stick into Google, there are plenty of sites that tell you what they all do.

Add MS Antispyware to your list as well, it's actually rather good.

Download AVG anti-virus, free software which is pretty good.
