As the title suggests, would you buy a car without a service book?

My wife has very helpfully Spring cleaned the house and without checking, a box that contained my V5 and service book are now being mulched at a recycling centre...

I was planning on selling my car, but I'm now thinking it will be cheaper to run it until it's no longer economically viable to repair if the value has been wiped.

My local indie that have looked after the car for the past 7 years have told me it's pointless reissuing the history as I won't be able to pass this onto a buyer because of GDPR (surely it would be giving consent for the data sharing?).

Does anyone have any experience of buying/selling without history?

It may be worth giving a little more info about the car in question as depending on what type of car you're buying the service history can be almost essential or it can just be a little 'nice to have'. If you want an idea as to how the service history may impact the car value, maybe put the details in to we buy any car and see what the values differ by between full service history and no service history.

I'm purposely being a little vague as I don't want the mods to think this is an advert in disguise.

I have tried WBAC and there was only a £300 difference with and without history. However, their price is very different to the classified listings (5-7k off). I think this maybe because it's rare now and they won't be making anything like it again, hence the difference... but that's just speculation.

Service history by itself is not personal information, but usually dealers and garages systems link the service history to customer details in their records and can't be separated when printing out.

ask the indy to print off some copys of the previous receipts

is it a priceless supercar or a family car ?

dozens of people would buy a car with a fresh mot and one proof of last service without a car , even backstreet traders try and pass of vosa history as service history

a clean car without faults will always sell at the right price

When I traded in my last car I handed the salesman 5 years of invoices (with my name & address carefully cut out) for my trade in. As I got into my 'new' car I glanced back into the showroom to see the salesman dumping the invoices into his waste paper bin. He could have at least waited until I had left the car park!

Ask the indie to print everything off and then go through with a black marker pen and redact/delete anything that is personal information.

If you sell to a dealer they will then probably throw it all away anyway - because that's what they all seem to do.

I had suggested I would just marker pen the contact details off and I was told that's not allowed... Definitely BS.

It's a 14 year old hatchback with a large N/A engine... so mostly very unattractive to anyone but a petrolhead.

IIRC law now says if a customer requests any held personal information about themselves then it must be supplied by holding agency. Up to dealers/suppliers to make sure they only offer info about requesting customer.

If the service history has your own personal data on it, they can have to provide it. If you are after anything from a previous owner, then they can't provide it.
Apologies smile

It's the former, my data. I will speak to them again and hopefully someone more helpful with answer this time.

Surely this is your car that you are requesting service history for? Therefore any concerns over GDPR are irrelevant as it is your personal information.

You could make a subject access request to the garage for any personal information they hold on you and they would have to furnish you with that under GDPR regulations...

Not sure it's really 'personal data' though. I mean it's not anything like medical information, it's data held about a car... .

Personal data is any data that allows an individual to be identified from the information in question OR combined with any other information.

Just tell them you want it for your own peace of mind so you can check when X was last done without ringing them up?

I know. But as the document concerns the car then the dealer (if they can be bothered, hence their recalcitrance i think) can supply it, minus anything that identifies anyone.

As I mentioned, most of the systems automatically combine service information with customer data into records with no option to print out separate.

They'll have to find an alternative option then hehe One of those grey areas thrown up by GDPR, garages will have to adapt.
