I'm so out of the loop when it comes to phone networks, been with Vodafone PAYG last 20yrs as they were the only network back then to offer signal out here in the wilds of Norfolk.

recently me & wife have been wondering where our credit has been going turns out they have changed there basic plan so your charged £1 each time you call or txt then it's free for rest of the day that does not work for us as occasional users

I'm getting a headache looking at various websites none of it will suit us

We don't need monthly bundles or data or any of that jazz just want normal PAYG top up when we need to & a basic rate for calls & texts, still needs to work in rural Norfolk

Any ideas?

Probably something like a £6/month goodybag from GiffGaff which includes unlimited UK calls & texts. If you go on holiday, you can upgrade it to international calls & texts for the month and then back down.

You'd still have to put your postcode into the coverage checker to see what sort of service they offer in you area - but for basic calls & texts you won't be needing 4/5g.

Other PAYG options (from MSE) are:

It might be worth looking at the SIM free deals for who ever covers your area, such as the GifGaf deal mentioned previously. Worth looking up reviews as well for your area - I know my parents were recommended GifGaf by my uncle, who found their service great in his area - for them they ditched it early as they had issues and the help desk proved to be more than a little useless at the time.

Aside from GiffGaff, If Vodafone works fine in your area then they have a PAYG service called Voxi and 3 network also have Smarty which seems to offer a massive amount of data for the money.

Most if not all PAYG will offer free mins and texts it will probably come down to if you need data and the coverage in your area.

If you ring Vodafone they will put you back on a traditional PAYG tariff, the same happened with an elderly relatives account a while ago

OP: how much a month were you spending before the plan changed?

Parents are on PAYG giffgaff, works well for them. They use maybe £20-£30 a year each, accounts are set to auto topup when the balance drops below £3.

I use GiffGaff as I can always get a signal. They use the O2 network.

I switched to Smarty as the price was better but couldn't get a signal (Three Network) inside the (modern) house so went back.

Smarty is good if you can get signal, they refund you for data not used.

Try 1p Mobile

Uses EE network.
Calls and texts are 1p / min

Need to top up by £10 every 4 months, so £30 per year - the credit rolls over though.
