Voluntary Termination

Hello,

I’m planning to terminate my deal for my VW Polo in the next couple of weeks and have a couple of questions.

Firstly is that after it’s MOT last week I was told the cambelt is due a change as the car is now 5 years old, it’s done 60k, I was wondering if it’s possible to hand it back without doing the cambelt?

Secondly, when booking I have the option to replace just the cambelt or that and the water pump, would it be possible to do just the belt? It would save about £50

Providing you have paid half of the total condition is irrelevant. If you are just voluntary handing it back then it will go to auction and they will come after you for the rest.

Was it just an advisory on the MOT?

If it was, I would just give it back and see if they say anything.

I can terminate it for just over £800, at this point I’d rather hand it back than leave it to sit on the drive, especially since it failed the MOT due to handbrake caliper sticking from being still for so long!

So would you say it’s worth handing it back as is? I need to get 1 tyre replaced but apart from that it’s still in good condition.

Cambelt was mentioned on the health check they did, it says in capitals ‘DUE’

I have a feeling it has to be taxed and MOT'd when you hand it back? If it's failed an MOT it would be hard to argue that you are returning it in a reasonable condition (i.e. unroadworthy).

I'd be surprised if they'll accept a car back without an MOT

You will have to get the car MOT'd and part of your PCP agreement likely states that the car must be serviced.

Any items listed as MOT fails will need to be rectified and a valid MOT presented, though anything listed on the original failed MOT as 'advisory' can be ignored at this point.

Sorry, I got it fixed and passed in the end. It’s taxed, MOT’d and had a service in December, I’ve only done 3k miles since last year when I’d usually do 20k+

I have all service history too and repair invoices.

Is the Cam belt actually due now or soon to be due?

What does the service schedule say. If it says 5 years or 60k miles and either one of those has passed then its due and you are meant to get it done before handing it back but it might be worth looking at the contract to see if it states the charge for not getting it done and see if its cheaper than getting it done.

In my experience with VW
is the 5 year time interval is a VW UK recommendation and if you check the service booklet there is only a mileage interval given for the cambelt change.

Therefore I would say there is no requirement to have it done prior to handing the car back.

Personally I'd get it done because if they say it should've been done, they'll charge you main dealer prices for the work, also if they recommend doing the water pump at the same time then get it done as you don't want any undue charges.
