So the Mrs would like a 'push present' and i've narrowed it down to a Cartier Love bracelet, Cartier Tank or JLC Reverso. She already has a nice Rolex so I'm tempted by the white gold Love bracelet.

What are peoples thoughts on these - I guess by its weight in gold its way overpriced and i'm paying for the brand and perceived exclusivity. That said, is it a classic design piece that will hold on to its value for years to come or half in value as soon as I leave the shop?

This can fk right off. My mum told me about 'push presents' when we were pregnant with our first. If my wife asked for one, she wouldn't be my wife any more. The dumbest idea ever - isn't the new baby enough of a present for pushing rolleyes

Got to say I agree with the above. This sounds like a marketing term to keep men buying jewellery through different stages of life.

If you have to buy her something then I guess the watch is much better value for money than those bracelets. I would probably put the money towards something nice for the baby or a special first holiday.

If you must buy into the American-ism push present thing, then reverso - you could even maybe get it engraved on the, er, reverse, with the birthdate, or perhaps something like their fingerprint or something to commemorate it.

I am in no way biased given nowadays I wear pretty much nothing but Reversos laugh
They are awesome watches.

The Tank is also a timeless classic, and the quartz models very reasonably priced.
I know precisely naff all about bracelets, but would expect that anything coming in a blue Tiffany box would be desired above most others.

My wife has one and when we got it 11 years ago it was A LOT of money. We got it at Heathrow on the way out to the US and that made it substantially cheaper.

She is a big Cartier fan and has a number of pieces - at the time one of their watches too. I’ve never looked at the items as investments but after 4 years she saw a Rolex she liked and as she isn’t into watches we sold the Cartier. Yes we lost money but not a lot! The right items are very similar to Rolex depreciation, (not talking current Sports model craziness).

Whilst we are not selling the Love bracelet I would think the prices of the new pieces compared to what we paid would mean we could easily sell it for a lot more than we paid. Either way, at the worst it is not worse than any piece of jewellery you buy. It is worth way less than you paid but with the name it will probably do better over time than anything without the brand.

Yes, i'm not that keen on 'push presents' but the money isn't really doing anything in the bank and we can eventually hand it down to our new daughter

Torn on the reverso - I have a Grande date with moonphase which I love but I just feel that i'll be forever being asked to wind and set the time again biggrin

I'll go take a look in the Cartier store once it reopens and see what the bracelets are like - thanks all for the input smile

The leather straps are amazing on the tank solo xl, really really thin and buttery smooth. You really do have to see them in the flesh to appreciate. That said, the other half has some mildly vegan tendencies and I went for the bracelet. Just the right amount of bling, prices not too offensive.

Got my wife a Cartier love bracelet as a "push" present too. I resisted for ages, but no point in fighting the inevitable!

To answer your question - they are NOT worth the intrinsic value of the gold. However, the brand and "hype" means resale value is very supportive and you shouldn't lose anything should you need to sell later down the line. Cartier raising prices well in excess of inflation also helps.

I often use that same logic for my cars and watches - so was futile fighting it this time round!

Good luck smile

Push present sounds like a rather vulgar Americanism and its use should be resisted.

This?

At nearly six thousand pounds I wouldn't. You could buy a copper rheumatism bracelet at a fraction of the price and achieve a very similar look. I say that as someone who likes Cartier generally.

On the subject of "push presents"; if that floats your boat then go for it. Personally I was horrified when I heard about a friend of a friend who popped out a watch in the delivery suite and put it on his wife's wrist. It stimulated the sort of cringe reaction that I actually felt physically in the pit of my stomach.

What I would do, and anyone who knows me will tell you that I am a man of exquisite judgement and taste, is buy her a Cartier watch, have it engraved with the date of birth and child's name, and gift it at home a week or so later.

Cartier reduces Love Bracelet Price..! Can't believe it..! Our 40th wedding anniversary is fast approaching and my wife has been hankering for the Classic Yellow Gold LB priced at £6K with absolutely no discount available and a price increase expected at the end of March I thought it was time to take the plunge,so spoke with one of thier "ambassadors" (sales man) and was delighted it has come down in price to £5650 which I know is not a lot but my wife says she has never ever known any price reduction in the past...! So you can imagine how happy I am... I've just saved £350....thumbup

Oh... and the DHL delivery was Free...yes

I too had to google push present....its a bid odd the way they have framed it but the concept isn't new.

I bought my first nice watch (present to myself) for our wedding - it will forever be my wedding watch and I'd never sell it.

You buy your Wife to be an engagement ring and wedding bands all signify a date.

My dad bought a ring that he still wears today when I was born.

When I hopefully have children I'd like to buy something significant for me and the wife, albeit at a much lower price point but something that you keep none the less.

With regards to the actual value of Cartier stuff, my wife's engagement ring was a Cartier full diamond trinity ring which had a retail price of £15k, and I purchased it through Bonhams for around £5k. Came with original box and documents etc and looked like it had never been opened, but someone lost £10k on it, and I ended up with something that my wife was delighted with for a price I considered reasonable.

Based on my experience, I wouldn't go buying anything new from Cartier as it just seems like they tend to take a bit of a hit. You can get more bang for your buck buying used.

My Dad has bought my mum numerous Cartier pieces at auctions over the years as well, and they always seemed to be considerably less than retail as well.

I have deleted all my comments on 'push presents' as this probably isn't the time or the place for them.

I wouldn't dream of gifting my wife a used, preowned or indeed pre-loved Cartier Love Bracelet for our 40th wedding anniversary.... don't think I'd make 41 years if I did....hehe

As she's informed me it's only £150 a year.....! thumbup

It depends how you look at it. Everyone views things like this differently.

People are happy to buy 'used' houses, classic cars, vintage watches, art, antique furniture, and certainly 'used' jewellery/diamonds. I don't see the difference personally and nether does my wife. In fact, if she thought I had 'wasted' money in the process of buying her something, she probably wouldn't be impressed. She likes to get value from her/our purchases more than I do.

I can't imagine anyones wife turning round and saying "I don't want this vintage £40k diamond Cartier/Tiffany necklace you just bought me because it's second hand" such a statement would speak volumes about the receiver of the gift.

People are well within their right to desire nothing but brand new jewellery, and that is totally fine. But for myself and my wife, we would rather leave the £10k saved in our bank or stick it into buying a new house.
