100 miles a day, no more than 10K

I am moving house soon to an area quite far away from where I live now and it means my daily commute will be changing from 10 miles to 100 miles a day! (50 there and 50 back). I need to find something that will be economical and reliable as I will be racking up the miles at quite a rate.

I know the obvious cars spring to mind like Insignia, Mondeo, but with reliability a must I was thinking maybe Honda Civic 1.6 Diesel? Not sure if anybody has experience with this car/engine? It doesn’t have to be any particular body style of car just as long as it has good mpg and will be a reliable companion. I have absolute max 10k to spend and would prefer something no more than about 7 years old. Any help appreciated!

Yep good shout with a 1.6 Dtec Honda About as economical as cars get and surprisingly nice to drive. 80 mpg is realistically possible if you drive sensibly on a long run.

Depends on the route but a hybrid Toyota is also worth a look. Probably not quite as economical as the diesel Honda on the motorway but petrol is slightly cheaper and will be even cheaper to maintain. Takes a bit of getting used to to get the most out of hybrid drive train but surprisingly capable/pleasant if you avoid the foot to the floor drone weak point of the CVT.

Maybe look at the Volvo v40 although one the newer 2.0 D2 engine. The older ones have the 1.6 Ford/PSA one which, if not looked after can have potential issues.

I used to have a 60 mile each way commute. fking miserable. Cost a fortune and took all my time.

Changing job to one more local was the best thing I did.

Just a thought.
