A Question for Apple Watch Owners
Discussion
Am thinking of buying an Apple watch; however, I'm undecided on whether to go for one with 4g or just with wifi. I already have a pay monthly account for my iPhone 12 with o2. If I bought a watch outright from o2, it would then cost about £5 a month for the 4g watch contract.
As it's pretty rare for me not to have my phone with me, it's pretty hard to justify the 4g watch.
First-world problem I know! - but it would be interesting to hear some views from those who have the 4g watch.

I'm still on my apple watch gen2... and in all those years, nope, never wished I'd got the cellular version. Like you, I've almost always got my phone on me.
My other half is new to apple watches and has v6, with cellular. She leaves her phone at home when she walks the dog... that's about the only time she's without her phone. And so on a very small handful of occasions she's taken a call while out.
Remember you can still answer on your watch if your phones with you, so you really are just covering the times your phone isn't with you, and what occurs then.

I had a sim for my 3rd gen but cancelled the £5 monthly contract.
The connection was too unreliable to work as a replacement for the phone.
My phone was with me too often for the phone sim to get much use.
It was useful in the summer without a coat.
If the signal was more reliable (I'd guess 70% compared to phone) I might have kept it.

Whilst not apple I did have an android Huawei smart watch with 4G as the first one I bouhgt, I quickly realised the 4G aspect was a waste of time, it was stolen and I replaced it with the same model with no 4G and I have had other smart watches since without the 4G option and not missed it.
I've only ever had the cellular versions and will almost certainly continue to do so.
Got my first celluar Apple Watch when my wife and I were nearing the birth of our son. I was able to head out and be contactable without having to lug my phone (one of the larger ones), whilst also being able to listen to music and podcasts.
I still continue to run most days of the week and I can choose to either download or stream music and podcasts to my cellular Apple Watch. My wife has the wifi only version and she often forgets to sync podcasts, so will get a few hundred metres into her run and once out of range of wifi and with no more buffer, the podcast cuts out.
I'd say unless you're looking to specifically exercise outdoors with it for long periods and need to be contactable, or you're looking at the more expensive stainless steel or titanium versions that include cellular as standard, you'll probably be fine with the wifi only one. Apple Pay will also work on the wifi version away from the phone.
Apple does a no quibble 14 day open box return policy (just don't damage the item) if you're really on the fence. Add that to the network and it's just a 30 day rolling contract, so you can always cancel before your 14 days are up and return.

I’ve had both in the past and my third (current) is cellular but I haven’t bothered paying the extra for the separate connection as I just don’t have it that far from my phone for the majority of the time.
Nice to have but unless you go running / swimming often enough I couldn’t see the point.
Just got a good deal on this version and went with it.

Cellular used to get more local storage (for music and whatnot) although I think that's evened out now as they all get a fair bit more these days.
As others say - if you don't see any value in doing basic calling / messaging or streaming music (or, in a pinch - tracking your location or raising the alarm if you fall) when you're not carrying a phone then don't bother with it.

I think this is the usecase for having cellular and because I don't run I have never activated the cellular on my watch. Even when I ride my bike, I take my phone. It slips into thee saddle bag. Having the watch means I do not have to take it out and having the phone is helpful for when I am having a Buggs Bunny said:
