a Friend got one of those new AMD Laptops with nice graphic card & tells me all the time how cool it is/what an massive upgrade it has been ( He does software development/ AI codding/ runs scrapers/ runs several VM's on it and I totally get it that he is benefiting massively from such power).

That obviously makes me want to get one as well, and Upgrade from a Laptop with i5 8350U to one with 4800H Ryzen & 1660ti.
On paper the CPU is 3x more powerful with like 15X more GPU power compared to my integrated graphics.
A crazy power upgrade indeed...

However.. The thing is.. I'm not utterly convinced that I will see any Real Benefit/workflow improvement whatsoever for my work that I Do ( Web Development/static content creation)
My way less powerful laptop still flies for everything that I do + runs a couple ultrawides with 4-6 full screens open without a hitch, So I'm not really seeing what it will actually do better with that massive power improvement since everything already runs nice for me biggrin

Anyone perhaps upgraded recently to one of those laptops and can tell their experience?

Due to covid messing up the market, I can probably sell my old (still kinda new) laptop and get one of those with paying maybe only extra £100, so almost a free upgrade with actually massive power boost.
Still.. I can't convince myself...

You had me at "Almost free upgrade"

£100 for a fresh warranty seems a decent price to me. Extra speed is a bonus.

And, yes, 4800 based PCs are fast. But I'd imagine that your experience as a web developer depends more on server speed than your local machine's.

Agree with nyt, worth it just for the warranty.

You should notice a speed increase, even if your current one does fine, however, I wouldn't expect it to revolutionise your life. It will however, play modern 3D games very well whereas your current machine will probably only play 20 year old games at a half decent frame rate.

That's what I'm worrying about the most - I would get a machine that can run any newest game and I will most likely waste weeks trying out all the games I have missed over the past 5+ Years biggrin
