BMW Question

Hello forum members,

I apologise if this is the wrong place for my post, it’s been a while since I posted a thread.

My wife and I have decided on buying a small
SUV and have chosen BMW as I have owned them in the past and enjoyed ownership.

My question are as follows. I was hoping I could seek some opinions and advice please.

We like the X1 as it offers a good amount of cabin and boot space. I just don’t know whether to go with the 118i 1.5 petrol, or the 118d Diesel engine?

I once owned a 1 series 1.5 3 cylinder some years ago and really liked it. There were very mixed reviews out there on its performance but I never had any problems and always thought it was pretty nippy. The only thing that concerns me is will the power be more mooted with a slightly heavier vehicle such as an X1?

Naturally I will test drive but I always think a short stint in a car doesn’t provide a real-world usage experience.

Also, I’m a little worried as to where we will see diesels going over the coming years. I’m not concerned about resale value as we’ll be keeping this car for a long time and probably won’t change it again now until electric is the norm. My concern is for expensive diesel taxes that the government may introduce, or perhaps even more regions banning diesels?

There is a slight possibility that I may choose an X3 in which case I would definitely choose the 2 litre D xdrive, but again, am concerned about the whole future of diesel.

With reference to servicing etc, would an X3 actually be that more expensive comparatively to an X1?

It would be great to hear your thoughts and thanks in advance.

For me I don't think there's much difference in use between modern petrols and diesels - all have lots of turbocharged torque, and are generally good units.

I'd have the petrol in either 3 or 4 cylinder guise - the 3-pot will be slow but they all sound quite nice, the 4-pot is uninspiring to listen to but obviously a lot pokier. Both avoid the nastyness of filling up with diesel stink, and potential backlash about diesel (even though proper EU6 diesels are fine now).

I think the choice between petrol.and diesel is.still very much dependant on the type and length of journey you will be making. If you have a long daily commute then diesel, if you are mainly driving around town and to.the local shops then petrol.

Personally I doubt I will ever own another diesel car but that's because I don't like them.as a personal choice and my driving uses dont justify it anyway.

We live in Surrey, so not city life. Quite rural with motor way runs a couple of times month. No commuting in the car, just driving around town with our family mostly.

That usage screams petrol to me. Chances are you will fine with a diesel if you do a couple of motorway journeys each month but with modern petrols doing 40mpg combined, I would just opt for one of those.

Obviously a test drive is needed but the 1.5T is not going to be breaking any land speed records, I have the 2.0T in our Mini and feel it’s not as quick as I want sometimes but we all have different expectations.
