AVR receivers & 2.2 HDCP compliant tech???
Discussion
Hi Guys -
think i may have bought a brick by mistake...
Got a 5.1 AVR receiver from ebay - all good setting up blu-ray player, sky q box and my old basic roku streamer....
happy days...
then i tried to get it to play 4k streams.
at this point, it got all uppity - and said that something is HDCP 1.4 compliant and needs to be 2.2.
reading between the lines and doing a limited amount of research - it seems that new HDMI has a layer of coding that protects against copying, and as an older AVR is effectively taking the signal and re-creating it (i though it was pass through....) then its NOT HDCP 2.2 compliant.
So - at the moment - i can either have 1080p with 5.1, or - (as the epson projector has limited audio outs) a HDR/4k stream going into a cheapo bluetooth speaker......
seemingly does 4k, but not 'new' 4k.......
bit of a learning curve for me this - so if anyone has any sage advice - would be most grateful.
AVR is a Yamaha RX 820
Projector is an Epsom TW 7000
Sky Q box
Roku 4k streamer

If I am reading this correctly, I had the same problem. I changed by projector to a 4k and the picture kept dropping out. I have 5.1 running through an ancient Pioneer receiver. My workaround as the PC is the source, was to run one HDMI to the AV amp and using another output from the same graphics card, run the second output to the PJ.
edit: I forgot to add: if you use your PC with a DVD/Bluray player this should work.

I had this a few years ago, a total pain.
Unfortunately every item in the chain has to be 2.2 or it won't work in 4k.
I ended up retiring (repurposed thankfully) a perfectly good Yamaha AV amp and splashed out on a 2.2 compliant one with HDMI pass-through capability.
You can piss about, as I did, trying various workrounds like HDMI reurn path from the TV etc but I had terrible time alignment problems with syncing the audio to video.

Would one of these work?
UltraHD HDMI 2.0 Audio Extractor Converter CEC 4K@60Hz 444/30Hz 1080P HDR10 HDCP2.2 3D, Optical TOSlink/SPDIF/Analogue Stereo RCA(L/R), 5.1CH Splitter for Headset Speaker Amplifier Soundbar https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07GZGDYQX/ref=cm_sw_r...
I had the same issue with the main sky q box as well - had a workaround of using the optical out.
But it seems between the projector and roku 4k stick, the only separate autio out is a 3.5mm jack.
Actually, thats not strictly tru - the projector has A blutooth out - so i will try that as a short term - but I’d imagine thats only stereo?
I'd say, no it won't work as there is no mention that it is 2.2 compliant.
My best attempt before throwing in the towel was to output to the TV in 4k via HDMI and then use the tosslink optical return from the TV to the amp for sound. It worked but I could never get the sound and video to sync properly despite having time alignment adjustment available on the old Yamaha amp.
At the time I did a lot of research and even started a thread on here about it.
The only conclusion I came to was to update the AV amp to a 2.2 compliant one with full HDMI (with 2.2) pass through. An unnecessary and expensive thing to have to do in my opinion if you want proper sound with 4k. I have to say though, the new (now three years old to me) amp was and is very nice to use. Marantz in my case.

or are they just spammy title words?

@£30 quid - i though they might be worth a punt - but not ideal to have a heath robinson-esque workaround!
annoyingly, my projector has no optical out, and the Roku stick seems to only go straight in....
doubt i'd get the money back on the amp - i'd feel a little disingenuous describing it as 4k, but knowing that the vast majority of 4k kit wont work through it....

The only solution is a 2.2 reciever I'm afraid. I had exactly the same issue last year. Converters are a pain, and chances are stuff like 4k60, Dolby vision and maybe even HDR won't work properly despite the claims etc. Forget trying to make anything work with optical...that only does basic DTS 5.1, not DTS+ or HD audio like DTS HD or True HD.
Try and return the receiver you bought, or sell it on.

Please report back with the answer.
Just to loop back on this one for others experiencing similar.i got one of these:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07GZGDYQX/ref...
- so the sky/bluray goes into the Reciver direct (in ony a Q box so this is for 'TV' where super high def not critical.
the ROKU now plugs into this audio extractor, which goes to the AV channel of the amp (so no ' control' through the device - just a dumb out.)
Does it work?
Well yes - it allows me the 4k content from the Roku with cinematic 'boom' as wanted -
would i recommned it?
Not really - per Dr Doofenschmirtz post, there are often syc issues with some content - this can be hit and miss whether Prime or netflix or google play....
works - but not ideal...
going to have to go on ebay
Is this stuff designed to stop you creating copies of the content to sell?
Isn't the answer to sack off all your legitimate sources and pirate the content so that you're not playing anything from a source that starts this whole load of nonsense iof?
I might have misunderstood it, but it seems like it's punishing you for doing the right thing.

Absolutely, it does feel as we are being punished for wanting the sound to go with the (4K) picture.Isn't the answer to sack off all your legitimate sources and pirate the content so that you're not playing anything from a source that starts this whole load of nonsense iof?
